I got my new FN finally, and I noticed there is no wire mesh separating my chin from a plastic tray like my old cage. I used Carefresh confetti bedding in the old cage when he couldn't get to it. I would imagine putting that bedding in the FN would result in him nibbling on it/eating some of it, which I would guess to be harmful? It is, right? If so I'm going to the store to pick up some (pine?) wood shavings.

Ive read that it expands in the stomach. Therefore, I wouldnt use it for my chin since they like to chew.

Carefresh IMPO is not safe. I have seen it during necropsies in the intestines of chinchillas that have died from impaction...

Pine shavings are better for chins for the reasons posted above. Plus it costs less. I would toss the carefresh.

i look at it this way, cardboard and paper should not be ingested by chins. carefresh is made out of a paper product, isn't it?

Yeah, I just came home from picking up the biggest bag of aspen bedding I could find at my local Petco. The entire bag is 4x the size of the Carefresh junk I had and is also 1/4 the price.
