I've been putting the Chin's in the basement the first couple years since i've had them, my room when i first got them use to be an attic before we moved so it still gets hotter then the rest of the house, so I'd put them there every summer. This past year, I moved my room down into the basement but ended up not being able to stay there because I realized I got sick from being down there constantly with my room there. And that's when It got me thinking.....how safe is it for them, if I got sick. They seemed fine, and nothing has been wrong with them. Luckily now i'm on the main floor and the ac cools my room down really good.
But I was wondering, for once I'm done with college and have a full time job, I'd be worried to have them in my room all day, incase it gets really hot one day unexpectadly, or hotter then was said and I didn't turn the AC on before I leave. The basement is an unfinished basement, concreate floor and walls.
I really wish we had central air, it would make it so much easier. I dread the summer months because I stress out over the temperature.
I don't want to give my chins away, but sometimes I feel it might be better, if someone had central air or worked from home etc....
I guess i'm doing a good job since they've never had anything wrong with them, and it's never gotten too hot for them, since I stress over it, I always overthink it and they end up completely fine. Sorry for the long post, sometimes I just can't help but think what if they had a better home, But I really do love them, sometimes it's just stressful.
So along with that long post, what are opinions on that type of basement?

(hope i'm posting this in the right spot, if it's meant to be somewhere else, I apologize)

I had chins in a unfinished basement for years. As long as it isn't damp and gets desent air flow they should be fine. Do you know why you got sick from being down their? Lots of cement basements leak or are damp, nothing a dehumidifier won't take care of.

No, I just started feeling sick all the time. And then went on small vacation for a couple days and never had the problems. Were guessing it was the basement.....maybe something in the air/smell or something. The chins have been put down their for a couple years and they haven't gotten sick, but it makes me worry after I got sick, not bad sick, just not feeling well. I don't think I'd have to put them down there until after I graduate college and start a full time job, and just for the summer months, incase one day gets too hot and their in my room and I didn't put the ac on or something.

I would worry because if you get sick in the basement the chins could get sick also. I wonder if it has anything to do with mold - that could make you sick - also the chins

That could definatly be a possibility and the only thing I can think of. They went down there every summer for the past five years, and that's when I moved down there and got sick, so they stayed in my room with the AC after that. I'm just worried thats the only option after college, once i'm not here to turn the ac on and be able to check on them every once and awhile.

Generally I would say chins in the basement is fine as long as there is air flow and it's dry. We keep ours in our unfinished basement that has a wall seperating it from the rest of the basement and we keep that area cooled/heated as necessary. But with it being the basement it doesn't take much. But it does concern me for the fact that you were getting sick. There are DIY mold tests that you can get that may help.

I may look into that. I'm guessing maybe I was just really sensitive to it, Where I usually put them, isn't the same spot I had my bedroom, there's a wall inbetween as well. I was surprised since they've been down there every year except last year, and they've always been fine, so maybe it was just me, or not even the basement. My brother had his room down there for much longer then i did and was fine. That part is now the exercise room. So maybe it wasn't even the basement, or if it was, maybe i'm just sensitive to that area. I can go down there and do often to do laundry and work out, I guess just having my room there is too much. I guess it's not as bad since they've been there year after year in another part with no problems.

Do you have a dust allergy? That could be why you were feeling sick when you were down there so much. Seeing as chines roll in dust, it wouldn't bother the like it ight you. Have to checked for any presence of mold in damp corners? That can make people sick, and should be avoided for all living critters!
