I really need your help on this one...

A friend of mine had babies a year ago and she gave away both babies to a relative of hers, mentionning she didn't know their sex yet and if it was going to be a boy and a girl, she could take one back.

Unfortunately, that 'relative' of hers didn't check their gender and left them together. Now my friend rescued them a couple days ago, they were living in filthy conditions and looked like hell.... Of course she feels guilty....

Let's check them out....Gosh a boy and a girl, and the female looks pregnant. THey are iwith her now, but I need to know exactly the dangers for the female. Cause if the female is really pregnant, then it is a brother and sister match.

I should mention the parents are from a not so good breeder and could be treated like pet store chins as far as genetic and quality goes.

I know inbreeding is done in some cases, but here is it only due to lack of knowledge and basically, stupidity.....

But are there no potential dangers as far as this close inbreeding goes?

The female is exactly a year and three months, she's old enough to have a good pregnancy. I never researched the close inbreeding dangers as I never thought it could be useful for me in my situation. But it is this aspect that makes me nervous. I know there's a big chance everything will go fine, but I just want to be informed if something turns out wrong.

The issue should not be for the female, as if she's old enough to comfortably have kits, she should be fine. The issue would be with the kits. If the parents were prone to a genetic disease, then their kits would only be more likely to have an issue.
So I guess I would just be scared of malo or any other genetic issue.

I don't think there is a higher risk of danger for the girl in delivery but that the kits may have a higher possibility of contracting a genetic issue IF the brother and sister carried something.

Well, it's not as though someone's going to key-up the music for "Deliverence" or anything, as there's really no way to tell, until birth! Usually, everything is fine, but be prepared for anything - Murphy's law!!
That makes about 4-5 surprise litters in the past few weeks, and I only seem to remember once a month, maybe, on the other forum!
Maybe someone should invent a chinnie "pill!"

I told her everything should be fine and malo is the first thing that came to my mind as in Québec there is absolutely no possible way to figure out lines and stuff, everything is too messed up. Great then, that's what I thought. Just check out for the kits. I did my homework reading Alice Kline's book!

Is the female a good size? If she is a smaller chin she may have trouble and just make sure that you have a baby safe cage. I assume that you have them seporated and in their own cages now. So for now its just wait and see. Good luck with her!!!!!

Didn't ask about the size. Chins in Quebec tend to be on the smaller scale. But I will mention, thanks for reminding me!

The only concern you would really have is with the kits, and that would lie in any deformation, or health issues. Inbreeding compiles genes, both good and bad.

Overall though, just be ready for kits, and worry about the rest when/if it comes.

Thanks a lot guys!

THe female is 792g and the male 681g. THe female is probably about to give birth cause the belly was really 'swollen' and hard as she mentionned. They were fed Prestige food, could a bloat or any digestive problem could cause a swollen belly that bad?

A trip to the vet for an x-ray would confirm pregnancy or not, and tell you how many kits she'll have. If there are other issues, a exotics vet should be able to diagnose those, also.
Vet trips can stress some chins, hopefully not enough to bring on labor, but again, anythings possible!

But are there no potential dangers as far as this close inbreeding goes?

Nah. Brother to sister is only 25% inbreeding coefficient. I wouldn't worry about it. The more she messes with them the more likely she is to have issues.

Most likely they'll be happy, healthy kits.

I would try to not worry until the kits are born. What is done is done, so now she can just wait. no sense stressing mom out and complicating things.
