I mentioned this on the "other" forum, and although gas prices have gone down, money is even tighter, now.
There is a recleanable air filter with a million mile warrantee, that will increase your mileage from 2 - 10 mpg depending on your car!
It's a K+N filter, you can "google" it, go to the bottom of the page, and read the testimonials from all over the world, on different cars and trucks. The one that surprised me was the truck, with a turbo diesel, that went from 20 to 25mpg! 25% increase is huge!!!
Initial outlay is more than a paper filter, but you get it back quickly, and should be able to install it yourself!
When [not if] fuel prices go back up, you'll be way ahead!!

Is this air filter part of the engine or AC unit? I'm only somewhat familiar with cars, but I may be able to do this myself. :)

It's kind of like part of the engine. When you open the hood on most of the cars I've seen it's on the driver's side, in this box-like thing usually with clips to close it, although on my blazer it's closed with screws, and on bf's camaro it's more in the center of the car. And attached to the top of the box thing is something that almost looks like drier vent tube / pipes. Not the best description, but that's what it looks like to me. lol

I purchased a K&N air filter about 2 years ago for my car. It was around $60 from what I remember. I went from 23-25mpg to 18-20mpg and I kept it in for about 5,000 miles just to see if it was a fluke. I put the cheap ol filters back in, I'm getting 23-25mpg again.

LOL, thanks, I'll have to take a look this weekend and see what I fine.

TWF - What kind of car have you? I used to manage a repair shop, have sold over 100 of these, and never had a complaint!
Please notify them of this problem, as this filter will not even effect new car warrantees, it works so good!

Forgot to mention - there's places below their websight you can look-up your application and order from online - you'll need your engine size or vin number, and one sight says they won't be undersold! Or stop by a Auto Zone!

I put the K & N filter in my '92 Toyota 4runner last year.....and havent really noticed an increase in fuel mileage. I paid around $60 for it, but considering a disposable filter for me is around $20 I think it was worth the money.
