Im so excited, becasue I just found out i was getting a chin tommrow(My birthday Surpirse!) Im 12 so any tips? Iv'e read alot about them but any other tips then the basics, like dont get them wet,the dust baths, keep them cool ect.ect! Thanks

Chins can be quite expensive, so I would advise letting your parents browse through the health and hygene section, as if you get a boy, he will need routine hair ring checks.

Keeping them cool is a BIG deal, so dont take that one lightly. Make sure you have a good feed, not that kaytee crap. Get Oxbow, PanR, Mazuri, those off the top of my head are good ones.

Your chin will need a ton of things to chew on, and plenty of leaper shelves and an adequate pet cage. I dont feel that most cages from the pet store are adequate, check martinscages.com or get a Feisty Ferret or Ferret Nation and you can deck it out.

If you do a search for Ferret Nation Club on here, you can see all the cages. Oh and Quality Cages, they make awesome cages, totally decked out with proper shelves ( although I would add more) and a wheel that is good.

Plastic wheels bought at the store, IMO, are not big enough or sturdy enough, you may as well get someone to fork out the money.

There is a lot that goes into chin care, and I would seriously have your parents look at this site, and have them make a better informed choice about getting a chin, as emergent care can be needed, and more then not I see people posting on here about a sick chin and the parents wont take it to a vet, and that is heartbreaking.

You can check out the classifieds here, and ask your parents to get somethings from the sellers here that are chin safe and better then any store bought items to add to your chins cage.

Good luck with your new chin.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don't even think about getting one of those giant plastic balls that they have in the pet store!!!

Although it has a picture of a chinchilla on it, you will soon find out that these are referred to as "Balls of Death". A chinchilla can become overheated very quickly in one and their urine and poos combine to make a nasty slime in which their fur is soon covered...YUCK!!!

You will need to locate a well-qualified Exotic Veterinarian as soon as possible. You should make what I call a "Well Baby Checkup".

This is for two reasons. #1, you will get your new pet checked over by a vet. He should listen to his heart, check his teeth, examine his fur for any sort of fungus and do a fecal float. There may not even be a charge for this. I know that my vet does them for no charge, since you will then be coming to him for your care when it is needed. Having done this brings us to reason #2.

When (and it WILL happen) you have an emergency, you will already be an "established patient" and will be able to make an appointment more easily and there will be a greater likelihood that you will be seen sooner, rather than having to call around in the middle of the night.

Read and search as much as you can on this forum. Every category has some topics that are stickied so that you can use them for reference.

Good luck with your new baby!!! Be sure to post some pictures when you can...

Ok thanks for the tips, but my acconut has to be deleted becasue im 12, so bye :[

KayKay - You can still read all the forums, so please, continue to learn about your chin. When you turn 14, come right back and reregister and we will be thrilled to have you. You're just too young under COPPA laws right now to be on here.

The best advice is to read and read and read everything on this forum. I had a chin many years ago before I had the internet and thought that I knew the best ways to care for her. I was wrong. The books aren't always right and the pet stores are often wrong, too. I learned so much by reading things on here.

Also, I would be sure that you always have new, fresh things for your chin to chew. It's so important for their teeth. Throwing in a stone or a piece of wood is not enough. You need to be sure that she/he is chewing. I don't know if your parents have a PayPal account, but it would be great if you could order different kinds of chews from the people on here who have stores or sell stuff in the classifieds. There are only so many chews in the pet stores.

Keep treats to a minimum. No raisins. Personally, I give Idgie rolled oats, oat groats, and rosehips for treats. That kind of stuff you can find at the grocery store or health food stores.

Good luck and enjoy!

Congratulations for being 12 and coming on here for information. It amazes me when people your age are responsible enoough to do that and I really commend you for it!
