I think I scared him this morning.

When I got up this morning, I gave Figi (That's his name, I think I forgot to mention that) a dustbath but his cage is a little noisy when i try to open it and he got really jumpy. He seems a little upset with me. He won't accept treats from my hand, yet. What can I do to make amends with my little guy?

Time and patience, he is acting like most new chins. Give him a couple of weeks to settle down. What treats are you feeding?

I haven't gotten any yet. I've just been trying to give him a pellet or some hay until I can get some applewood pieces.

I would agree with ticklechin, just take it slow and easy. It's just going to take some time for him to adjust to a new environment and a new chin parent.

Just spend time sitting near his home reading softly so he gets used to your presence and voice. My chin really likes the seed heads (the flower cone shaped thing) from the hay, so I offered those as "treats" in the beginning when I got my chin, until I got chin safe wood and treats.

Not sure what time you offered the dustbath, but I would try doing it when you notice he's most active. My girls are pretty sleepy in the mornings, and they generally run from me if I try to interact with them when they're resting.

Don't worry, he'll come around eventually!

Time and patience--I have a girl who've I had for a year now and she still runs from me when the cage door is opened. Some chins get used to it, some do not. Just take time with her and I'm sure he'll start to get used to you.

Treats and patience...

If you scared him, he probably would've barked at you-it sounds sort of like when you squeeze a dog toy! It's their scared noise and it is unmistakeable-loud and distinct! He just isn't used to you yet, which is why lots of patience is key, move very slow, always be talking to him or singing in a quiet, gentle voice. Make sure he has a quiet place during the day for sleeping where he won't be interupted too much! Also, I used to feed my boy Sunny and give him water in the morning, I've moved this to nighttime just before playtime, so he knows now, after he gets his food and water, he's spending time with me and sometimes my daughter. He waits by thee door now for the second I open it:)

Yours doesn't sound too shy! Mine was actually a little less shy than yours with women. He took treats from me when I went to pick him up before even bringing him home. I left him alone that night and then the next morning (before switching to a totally night schedule), he took a treat through the cage. Some need much more patience than others, though.

The breeder where I bought him gave me a little bag of treats she said were okay. There was a tiny bag of plain cheerios, a tiny bag of sunflower seeds, and a little box of raisons. I've had him for about 8 months and he still has most of the sunflower seeds and raisons because I now know they're not great treats. So he gets a 1/2 a cheerio a night, and 1 raison or 1 sunflower seed once a week (not including the 1/2 a cheerio that night). And occassionally (like once a month) instead of a sunflower seed or raison or cheerio, lol, he gets a tiny bit of alfalfa! I just bought an ounce of rosehips of ebay to see if he likes them as a little change, though he doesn't seem to mind his other treats-he loves them-but rosehips are much healthier than fatty, sugary treats!

Oh, and they can have applewood all the time-its not a treat you have to worry about-very good for their teeth, but they usually only eat the bark off and the rest is garbage to them:) So put a few peices in the cage and let them go crazy!
