This is the problem. A neighbor of mine had two chins she asked me to take care of for the weekend its been 2.5 months.I tried to talk to her before she added 2 more she has 7 counting the 2 I have been taking care of.The 2 I have are now 13 months male and female only 9 months. She thought it would be fun to breed a animal that was way to young to breed. They now have a baby that I have taking care of the whole time. She has only been here about 3 times to check on them.I asked her many times when she was gonna get them back She kept saying as soon as her hubby oks it.The other 5 she sold. She came over today asked when the baby can be taking away from his mom.I seprated the parents. She said I could keep mom and dad but she wants the baby. What should I do?????:banghead::cry3:

What I am understanding from your story. You are the keeper and she takes the babies to sell... hmmmm.
I would not give it to her periode. As far as I am concerned she lost all rights the moment she did not take them back within a reasonable time after the week end. 2.5months is not reasonable.

But that is my humble opinion.

Good Luck!

Take the baby as payment for having to watch the chins for nearly three months. I hate that she's taken advantage of you like that! (I have people really take advantage of me like that...but I don't want other people to go through it, too!)

It doesn't seem fair that you did all the work and she wants the baby now. Is this someone that you care much about? If your relationship with her were to go away, would you care? Maybe you should tell her to get lost and never to contact you again? The way I see it she sort of abandoned the animals with you...they're yours now and you should be able to keep them. Unless you had an agreement in the beginning, that is. It sounds like the agreement was for you to take them for a weekend...she sort of broke that agreement about 2.4 months ago!

Sounds like abandonment to me. If you WANT to keep the chins, I say you keep them. If she has sold the other chins, she is looking only to sell the kit- I would almost guarantee that, especially if that's the only one she wants. I would not allow her to take only the kit, if she wants the kit then she needs to take the other chins as well. Again, that is if you don't want to keep them. IMO those chins are now yours.

Tell her you need the kit to keep the mom or dad (whichever sex it is) company since they had to be separated since it was a bad idea to breed them to begin with...ugh, people really suck sometimes. If she says anything then give her a bill for the services you provided to her chins for the last 3 months...that might shut her up.

wow. i totally agree with susan! tell her instead of paying you for taking care of and feeding all 3 of them, you will be keeping the baby. you can let here know how much time and money you have invested in their well being especially the baby.
don't let her take advantage of you.

I agree that this situation falls under abandonment. Has she been paying you to care for the animals? Has she been paying for any food or supplies or are you taking all that upon yourself? If she is just sitting back letting you do all the work and trying to make money off of these chins, then she does not deserve to get them back.

They are better off with you.

Just say "NO". That is it. She sounds like an irresponsible ditz who is only interested in $$$ and not in the welfare of the animal.

Since she did not come to retrieve the animals 14 days after she said she would be there...the animals are considered abandoned. That baby chinchilla was never her's so she has no voice in what happens with that baby.

If she's super determined to get the animals back...tell her she can have the baby after paying you $10 per day for boarding for each day you've had him and then an additional $10 per day for the time you've had his mother.

Just wanted to say thankyou all for advice. I called my vet and asked them how much they would charge to have 3 chins for 2 months.Since I agreeed to take care of them for the weekend I thought I would be nice and not charge for 2 weeks.lol I gave her a bill for 2 months. I kept her cage in the same fifthy condition it was in and stored it outside in the shed. The dad has been living in the bottom of one of the ferret nation cage. Mom and baby have been living in a big bird cage. She thought I was gonna give her my cage.lol So she took one look at the bill and her old cage,That I told her monkey is the baby could escape. She slammed my door as she was leaving she said just keep them all.but she will never speak to me again...But monkey is mine and shes is SAFE AND THAT IS ALL I CARE ABOUT.GLORIA

All of the chinnies in the world would be better if more people like you were in it!!!!! I wouldn't call anyone who did that to their pets a friend anyway. She could learn alot about true friendship and compassion from you. Her loss, but three chinnies who deserve a loving home definitely win:thumbsup:

yay for you, you get to keep the chinnies and you got rid of a crappy neighbor!
good for you. you should be very proud for standing up for yourself and the welfare of your pets!

I think that was an awesome way of handling it! I am so happy that they are all staying with you where they will be well cared for. :clap1:

THANKYOU ALL I JUST COULDNT LET MONKEY GO,Plus if she didnt sell her to someone else. After the baby isnt a baby she probally would then

Wow, the nerve of some people! You definitely did the right thing. If she had gotten any of those chins they would just be sold or bred again most likely. Congrats on your new additions, even though they aren't really that new! lol
ETA: So do we get to see any pictures of these lucky chins?
