This morning, my 19 year old son comes in with another dog! A beautiful, well-trained, male Pomeranian named "Hercules" who's immediatly all over me! We've 5 dogs already, 4 pits and a lab, and he says it's "just temporary - a couple of days!" Yeah, right!
About an hour later, after I'm getting attatched, he says "Dad, you're the only one without a dog in the house, and he can be yours!" [by the way, he's all black, and I really like ebonies] Turns out, one of his friends mother bred him, and the female had two female puppies that she now wants to keep. Wants no chance for inbreeding! Would like to trade for two kits and a cage - for her grandchildren! [they're 9 to 12 years old]
This guy is about 10 pounds, which, from what I've seen, a little on the large side, just over a year old, and already gets along with all the other dogs! He's fully pedigreed, registered, and she paid over $1000 for him.
Anyone else out there with Poms? Anything I should watch out for? Breeders with females? [Yeah, I'm a sucker!]

Wow, how many dogs do they allow you to own in your area? We are only allowed 3.

So are we - I cheat a little! They usually don't push it unless someone complains!

Don't you rent though Rick? Isn't that putting the animals at risk by doing that?

Poms are cute, but I'm not a little dog person. I like my monster dogs. :)

Peg - yeah I rent, but this lot is like 80 x 100, just in the back, and the owners don't care, as long as it's kept clean.
I've always had dogs over 50 lbs. too - but this guy thinks he's as big as the pits!
My wife wants to put Endust on him and send him under the beds!
She also laughs hysterically when he barks, it's so high-pitched compared to the pits!

I would never get more than the legal limit in my area. If you did get caught "cheating", then you would have to rehome the dog. That's not fair to the poor animals. That is 3 dogs that would lose their home because of a selfish owner wanting more dogs than allowed. JMO

2 belong to my 19 yr old son, who says he's moving out, so I thought [as did he] we'd be O.K. if caught. He'd just be moving out sooner! Maybe taking 3. I could always put the Pom in a chin cage, and call him a giant chin? Or what's that one that's extinct?

Haha! It might just work.... You should take pics of all the dogs and post them!

I'd love to see pictures! Worse came to worse you could always get a kennel license couldn't you? I'm not sure if they apply only for those who breed dogs or what? Friend who breeds Doxie's has one, but they do require inspections.

Depending where you live a kennel license can be next to impossible to get. For a start, you have to be in an area that is zoned for a kennel. Since he rents, he'd also have to have the permission of his landlord before even applying. Then there are usually a lot of hoops and red tape and high fees. In San Diego, the application fee for a kennel license is $20,000 and non-refundable. If you are lucky enough to be granted a kennel license, there are twice yearly inspections and you have to reapply every year.

All in all, it's a bad idea to have more animals than you supposed to have. It's never a good idea to put your animals at risk by going over the allowed limit, whether it be a limit imposed by your landlord or the local governing authorities. You run the risk of being evicted, having your animals seized or both.

Where I live there is a neighbor who has about 14 dogs and the lots here arent very big. The number of dogs allowed is "a reasonable amount." People complain about their dogs all the time because they go out of town for 3-4 months at a time and leave a teen in charge of taking care of the dogs. They look at it as being ok since they are a "rescue."

The person designated to put a number to reasonable amount is too afraid to upset the people with the dogs so he's stalling. There is a board meeting about the family sometime this month I think. If they put a number on the dogs allowed they are going to have to get rid of the others. Word is that the number is going to be 3. Its very sad that 11 of them will have to be rehomed.
