Hi guys,

I have a little male chin, he's about 2 months old now.

I read something about "fur ring checks"...could somebody please tell me more about this, at what age I must start doing it, how often it must be done. How to do it and what I am looking for?

Luckily I have owned male horses before and have had to clean their uh...bits...so checking a little chinnie shouldn't be a problem for me! ;) Just need to know what to do!

Same procedure, only "littler bits"! Be carefull if you've long nails, and you can wait about a month! There's a sticky somewhere about it!
Aren't you glad you didn't get an elephant? haha

I learned by going to youtube.com and searching chinchilla hair ring checks. It gives you a general idea. Although it's kinda blurry. Then i googled images of chinchilla hair ring. There are some very good pictures of a hair ring. Good luck. It gets easier each time you do them.

Ah, one of the joys of being a male chin owner, heehee! I believe you don't have to start doing them until they are about 9-10 months old. I did my first one when my boy reached a year old. You should do them at least once monthly. Hair ring checks aren't that bad. It's easier if you have second person to help you with holding him with the chin's back against their chest, and then you can push on the sheath and pull out the penis to check.

Here's a link to a good video that shows how to do it, scroll to the bottom of the page:

Keep a tube of KY jelly handy just in case.

Do you guys use KY, I have found that to make it SO much harder. I just grab them and do it, you really get quick after awhile. They don't mind that you are doing it, they are just annoyed as usual!

We keep some Vaseline on hand just in case, but only if it won't retract when we're done. Luckily we've had no need for it so far.

I've only used the KY once because it didn't retract all the way, but just a tiny bit of and it was easy to wipe off.
