Today I found my bird...

Some of you may remember the thread I started a while back regarding the change-of-heart I had where birds are concerned. If not, you can read the thread here: http://www.chins-n-hedgies.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1686. But, the general synopsis is that while I have been fearful of birds for as long as I can remember, a chance encounter at the pet store had me shedding my anxiety and instead found me ready and willing to bring a pet bird into my life. But that's all ancient history at this point and I'm certainly not the girl I was even a few weeks ago -- I am now head-over-heels in love with anything and everything bird!

I was initially planning on running out and adopting my first parakeet (or pair of parakeets) just a few short days after coming to the realization that I'm no longer afraid of birds. But after a few days of thinking about things, I realized that I wasn't ready to adopt a bird -- parakeet or otherwise. So I've done some research, purchased the necessities, and found a reputable breeder who has served as a mentor of sorts. And today I decided to meet with the breeder face-to-face and during that meeting I found my bird! And he will be coming home to live with me in just under two weeks!

My new little guy is a white-faced cinnamon cockatiel. He was hatched on 6/27/08 and is the most adorable little critter that has ever existed. He was hand-fed and is tame. He is absolutely precious and as soon as I held him I knew that he was going to be my bird. I spent about two hours with him this afternoon and while I can't wait to bring him home, I figured it would be best to hold off and get everything purchased and set up beforehand. And since I have a business trip to attend next weekend in Indiana, it made sense to wait until that Monday to bring him home. But he's been paid for and I can visit him anytime...and he's mine!

I need to return or re-sell the cage I bought for the parakeets I was planning on purchasing and therefore I need to get a much larger cage in anticipation of the larger bird, but that's not a problem. Many of the toys I purchased, as well as some of the perches, can be used for the cockatiel and I am going to get a supply of the food the breeder uses at a local pet store that deals primarily with avians and exotics. And my newfound friend and mentor is going to go shopping with me so I can ensure that I have everything in place for my new little guy before he comes home. But if anyone here has any information or suggestions, please feel free to let me know.

I'm so excited and I am just so in love with my little man! Experiences and support is most welcome as is any information you may have about online resources and forums. I can't wait to bring him home, but until then I know I have work to do -- I want to do all that I can to ensure that my new cockatiel is healthy and happy for a long, long, long time to come.

Oh, and name suggestions are also welcome! As I said, he is a white-faced cinnamon that's just under a year old. I don't have any pictures yet, but I'm going to try to get some when I go visit him later on in the week. But, trust me, he's a cutie patootie with a personality to match! And he's all mine!

Yes, pictures would be great!

I got my first female cockatiel a few months ago and she is so much fun. I am home full time so she spends a lot of time with me and becomes very upset when left in her cage too long. I can hear her calling for me when I walk through the front door. They are such a social bird and are just like having another child. You will really bond with your new little guy. Mine is a female so she doesn't talk, and I would love to have a male someday.

Congratulations on your new feathered friend!

Aww, I am so happy for you! I knew you'd love a 'teil. We have cats and birds so that can be done, although we had one cat that we had to send out to the garage because she did kill our bird. Congratulations, again!

Congrats. Cockatiels are a very fun and interactive bird. We have and raise several different kinds and tiels seem to be the most overall calm and accepting birds so make awesome pets.
