So I got hired on Nov 1st. I work as a school bus driver for the school district, and I've been a substitute for the last year. You start as a sub, and when openings open up, you apply and if you are next in line you get "hired!" I was first in line and was able to get a 4 hour/day shift. Some only got 2 hour/day shifts. This is pretty normal when starting out, as you don't have a high school, but you can sub high schools if needed. I can't wait to start moving up in seniority! I'm glad I am pretty young as I think I want to do this long term. I really enjoy driving the buses and working with the kids. The highest seniority drivers started in 1979 :O Wow! You can get middays, and field trips the higher the seniority you are. I looked forward to that. You get more hours as a sub, but no benefits because you aren't in the union, so I decided to get hired and work my way up. Today I did orientation and I have to decide which retirement plan, medical, dental, etc... I want to be on. It's so much to think about!! And medical is so expensive :O!! Anyways, just pretty excited that I got hired, but it kind of sucks that I will be getting less hours. Oh well, I love working for the school district! Summers off, lots of days off, good benefits, and you don't work full time (unless you've worked here a super long time! !
