I finally did it!!!

I have wanted guinea pigs for quite a while now. My three year old granddaughter always wants to hold the chinchilla, which lasts for all of 30 seconds because then the chin wants to run. So.........I finally got myself two little guinea pigs. I bought them from Craigslist but all is not so good with them. I weighed them when I first got them home and a couple days later noticed the darker one was thin. I weighed her and she had lost almost 50 grams. So, four days after I get these little piggies, one is off to the vet. X-rays showed a blockage in her stomach. When I picked the piggies up, they were being fed a rat feed/seed mix. Though they did have hay in their cage. The vet thinks that blockage is from not enough fiber in that diet. I am handfeeding that baby pig Critical Care and she is taking TDM antibiotics as the vet said sometimes bacteria will begin to grow in a static stomach. Also, the piggie is on Reglan. Today she seems to be more active and her weight is coming up a little. I am very, very hopeful she will be fine. If she's not eating by Monday it's back to the vet. She's eating her Critical Care very well, though, and takes her medicine with no hassle at all.

Anyway these pigs live at my house as my daughter doesn't want to mess with them and my granddaughter can sit with them, at least the healthy one for now, on her lap for quite a while and feed the piggies a carrot and love it up. I love my little piggies who as of yet have no name.

Here they are................
First, the sick girlie. Isn't she a beauty? Today she weight 557 grams.

Next, the smaller piggie. She's a beauty, too!! Today she weighed 274 grams. She's just weaned. She also has the pink eyes that I just love.

Anyway, let me just remind everyone how important it is to have Critical Care on hand at all times. I'm so glad I always have a stash because in an emergency who has time to wait for it to be ordered? You can order it from Menagerie here on CnH. I will be getting a new pack to replace the pack I'm using now. All proceeds go to help Wee Companions small animal rescue. Having some Critical Care on hand may just have saved my new piggies life.

I'll keep you all updated on the dark piggies progress. I'll also post names when I think of some good ones for these two little girls.

I don't know.......I am positively ECSTATIC!! Even if one already ran me up a vet bill. She's worth every penny. I'm pretty sure she would have died at the previous home.

Good to know your piggies are doing better!

During the summer, the boyfriend and I rescued a brother/sister pair from a girl at my work who "accidently" bred them and did not know if their father was the mother's son from a previous "accidental" breeding or if it was an unrelated male. UGH. She gave them to us for free and we immediately racked up nearly $200 in vet bills for the male. He had constant, severe diarrhea- poor thing. Luckily we found a wonderful vet [about an hour away- geeez] who helped us figure out that his digestive tract was essentially destroyed and had no good bacteria in it. We spent the next month or so getting it back on track [ie: feeding him his sister's and another guinea pig's healthy poops in slushie form-yum!- good food, veggies, and bene bac]. He's happy and healthy now- albeit having a very sensitive tummy that is sometimes prone to mushy poops. Needless to say, I think the original owner was letting hers inbreed.

Anyway, sometimes the "cheapest" pets wind up costing the most. Haha!

I'm glad you were able to give those sweet little piggies a happy and healthy forever home!

The darker piggie still shows no interest in eating on her own. She is taking her Critical Care very well. Also, she takes her meds with no problem at all. She appears fairly alert and inquisitive when given free time but not nearly the energy off her healthy sister. I guess it's back to the vet on Monday.

Long story.........some years back a friends young daughter got piggers for her birthday. Parents were fine about the whole thing. The daughter has ADHD and struggles to have a normal childs life. So Nancy ( the mom ) had called me to chat and I asked about the piggers. I had also been to the birthday party and knew they were going to be a suprise.

Well the daughter was caught stuffing them into barbie clothes once. And another time she was caught comming down a flight of stairs with them in a wagon. So Nancy was telling me she had to put a lock on the cage for their safety and Nancy herself cared for them. She was almost in tears as she thought her daughter would recognize they were delicate creatures. Now her daughter does very well with the big dog they have.

So I told Nancy I would take them and find them homes if I could help. She was so happy that she almost started crying right then and there. So I took the piggers. Two boys. I really didn't want them but knew they would be safe. Well they ended up staying here for more then a year. I wanted to find the perfect home. I actually enjoyed them. My husband did not. They sang too loud and they were on his last raw nerves. But I enjoyed the happy little singing in the morning. Cutting up the vegs and listening to them chatter in bliss as they ate.

Then one day my husband said a lady at work was chatting and almost started to cry because her grandaughter's pigger died. The child was devistated. So my husband called me and wanted to know if I would like to adopt them to her. So the lady called and explained the situation. The piggy was just old and passed. I told her about the baby piggers not so good start at Nancy's home and that I was looking for just the right family.

The lady's daughter called and knew everthing about piggers as she took care of them for her little girl. The woman came and picked up the piggers. She said she was going to suprise her daughter. I was happy for the boys. They went to a nice loving family and I sent them off with tons of free things so the boys would be happy in the new move.

Good luck with your piggers. I didn't think I would like them. But they grew on me and they liked me in return. It has now been some years back, and I still miss calling out their names in the morning while chopping vegs and listening to them sing to me.

It hasn't been very long on meds and food for your little piggy girl. It sounds like she will be just fine with continued care.
