I got my chinchilla from PetSmart. I didn't even prepare to have one so I didn't know I should get one from the breeder. Anyway, they said that he's three months old. Five days later I went back to the store and they have a new one in the cage. They said he's also three months old. But he's a lot smaller than my chin. Not that its matter, I love him anyway. But I'm just wondering if they lie to me about his age.

to help your consideration, my chin adapts to me very quickly. The very first day he looked scared and run away from me but now he seems a lot more active and recognize me more. So, I'm not sure if i'm right but if he's old then he probably wouldn't get used to me this fast right?

I wish I could weight him but i can barely get him to stay still :) anyone has any suggestion?

There's no way to know how old he is without having a pedigree or a breeder to contact. Weight won't tell you anything as some chins are large and some are not.

When you buy from a pet store, most likely they lie to you. They don't have a clue how old those chins are. They come in from a broker and they say whatever it is that will get them sold.

If you have a towel or small blanket or scrap of fleece you can gently wrap him in that and weigh him.

There is no way to really tell a chinchillas age by their size. If your chin is still fairly young it might still have the bobble head look but I doubt petsmart would get them that young.

thats a shame :( I wish I know how old is my guy. Like i mentioned, i wasn't plan on getting a chinchilla. I was going for hamster. But obviously i chose a much bigger choice here. If I have known this before I wouldn't get him from a pet store

I wouldn't think the petstore was that off, he's probably younger than a year, just because pet stores know they can sell babies because they are cuter. *shrug*

Nothing wrong with an older chin though, they all act like kids on sugar. So doesn't matter if he's not young. Just enjoy him!
