Hi, my hetero beige female just had her first litter. It was only 1 female, but she weighed in at 56g. The dad is a TOV violet. The baby is standard grey with some odd veiling (head and neck are light gray, rest of the body is dark charcoal gray).

Anyways, I'm so excited and I immediately separated the dad, but he seems anxious and upset in the spare cage. He won't take treats, etc.

When can I put him back to avoid a breedback?

Thanks,

Oh I don't mind more kits. I just don't want her carrying chins while she's nursing. She has been very hard to breed. I think her first mate must have been sterile. So having a chin was like a miracle to me. I though she was the sterile one. I had no idea she was even pregnant until I saw the baby in the breeding box.

But what is the point to your breeding? A beige and a TOV violet are pretty much a useless combination. A violet is a recessive. In order for you to capitalize on the violet, you would need to put him with a white/violet or some kind of violet carrier.

Are you planning to show? Build a breeding herd? Make a few bucks off the offspring? Have mom just keep making babies and you keeping them?

It wasn't really a calculated choice to get a certain color of babies. After her long time mate died she was depressed and withdrawn. I went to a breeder and found that the only one who was docile enough to be with her happened to be a violet male. They were already snuggling on the ride home. Counting back 111 days, he put a bun in her oven only 6 days after we bought him. So the baby is a standard TOV violet carrier. I think I'll either sell her to or give her back to the breeder where the violet was born. I know it might seem weird, but I wanted to give the female a chance to be a mother at least once. I'm not breeding a herd or anything. I've only got 2 pairs and don't intend to keep any babies for more time than after they're weaned. I'm certainly not going to sell them on craigslist or something. I want a chin buyer or receiver to be very experienced with chins.

The other pair I have are 2 years old each. I introduced them over a period of 2 weeks in separate cages and now they are best buds. They are intended for breeding. They are both big and blocky. One is a white mosaic violet carrier and the female is a violet. I don't know if I'll try to show either of them or the babies yet. Never have been to a show. I bought them from Meadowbrook in WA.

I'm just trying to get a third opinion because one breeder said 10 days of separation and the other said 3 months. But I found the baby dry and with its eyes open at 10:00am yesterday, but it was probably born between midnight and 3:00am, so the violet male may have already bredback.

You are NOT breeding for the right reasons. Will it matter to you at all that we'll tell you that or are you going to keep putting them together regardless?

That's a double standard when you yourself are not educated.

Being big and blocky doesn't mean the should be in breeding. Do they have pedigrees? Do you know their history?

It is quite possible she's already been bred again. Honestly, you shouldn't put the male back with her. Period.

I think I'll get him fixed then. Thanks to all for your help.

And yes, all 4 of my chins have a good and extensive pedigree. 3 are from MBK and 1 is PSK.

There is no such thing as a standard TOV violet carrier. The baby is either a standard violet carrier or a TOV violet carrier. The TOV gene is dominant and cannot be carried.
