As I've been in the process of building my boys a larger cage, it got me thinking. Just how big, is to big? Is there such a thing as to big? Does it all relate to how much you want to clean? Ease of catching the animals inside? Safety concerns?

What's your take?

I would think with a larger cages safety/access to the chinchilla in case you need to get him/her would be number 1 priority....I have heard of people dedicating a whole room with double doors so there is no escapes ...to their animals so honestly I am all for the large areas but I can agree make it as big as you can handle cleaning as well! thats so nice you are building a cage Id love to make one some day too

I would say it gets to big, if they are able to fall from a unsafe distance from the floor. You want to make sure there is always something able to catch them if they miss a leap (and they will trust me) and fall..because if they fall from to far you will have an emergency on your hands.

I agree with AllieKatt's thoughts on cage size.

I'd be concerned about safety first, as AllieKatt said. My next priority would be cleaning and finally catching them. I have a FN142 and a CN162 with 2 chins in each and that's plenty of room for them. Everyone prefers the top level anyway, so anything larger would seem like an absolute waste to me. Now play areas are a different story entirely. That's where I'd splurge if I had an extra room.

My cages are big, 6ft tall, 28 in wide and 24 in deep for 1 chin but as you can see there is alot of actual square inches and not alot of jumping space, and they are easy to clean-the door is split to prevent escapes and the shelves are tile.

You all have valid points. Definitely all things I've been taking into consideration when building my cage. (As a side note, I also made sure my doors were large enough that I could fit head and shoulders through them. Best. Idea. Ever.)

So, let's have a hypothetical discussion then. Say for instance, that you're cage has levels or oops hammocks spaced appropriately so the distance of falling isn't ever more then a few inches, and an integrated carrier or smaller cage in which, should you need to get the chins out in a hurry, you can herd them into. Assuming these things, how big, is to big? Is there a to big? And realistically, how much space does one or two chin require? How much is the ultimate amount? And, if you had it your way, what would be YOUR dream cage? Cleaning issues non withstanding, of course.

Thats a really cool cage i always wanted an all wooden one but have no clue where to begin!

With my cages I can close off the hole between levels for easy catching, it was designed so a super pet dust bath fits right in to close it off.

Ozzy's cage is a cylinder style. It has 3 levels and his hammock at the top. He has plenty of room to run, play, and wall surf (as i like to call it). Its easy to clean as all the poop goes to the bottom ( he shakes his cage a lot lol) and catching him is never an issue, he will come to the door and just sit there waiting to be let out haha
