So just now I go to give the chins a treat and scritches, and my Mosaic girl, Bambi, beautiful Ritterspatch girl I have been waiting FOREVER to give me a kit- has a half eaten dead kit in her cage. It had just happened and she passed the afterbirth while I watched. I really don't know what happened, the kit was so small, 20 grams- so she should not have had problems delivering, but whatever happened, it was disgusting and so horrible. The legs and arms were ripped off and in the corner of the cage, away from the rest of the body. Poor Bambi is mostly white and all full of blood.
I have had way too much pain this week and this is just not what I needed. Now poor Bambi is freaking out and crying in the corner.
Please think before breeding, it is NOT easy and can be the most depressing thing in the world. Lost 2 kits in 2 days, not a good weekend. I have heard big ranchers say they are happy if 2/3rd of the kits make it to weaning. I have far better statistics than that, and still, it is just horrible to lose a kit every time. And you will lose kits if you breed.
