I have read here about the correct way to hold a chin tail.

I have been trying to hold my new chin by the base of the tail and she hates it. She struggled to the point that I was afraid I would hurt her.

I don't want to restrain her for a long time. Usually I only need to do this when I cant let her out for a long play time and just want to pet her for a few moments while the door to my bedroom is open.

What is the best way to get a chin used to being held by the tail for a quick look over or for their own safety?

Thank you.

Are you holding her upside down while holding her tail? Or are you letting her rest her paws on something at the same time?

For all of my girls, the moment I hold them upside down they stop struggling.

They don't like it necessarily but it is for their safety. As you do it more your chin won't freak out as much. I sort of cup the bum as I hold the tail between my fingers and support their front legs in the elbow of my bent arm. They really relax for me when I make them feel secure like that...holding upside down freaks me out lol but I have done it when one of my girls would not calm down, I don't think I have done it since.

My guy also gets relaxed when held upside down. Usually, when i hold him which is rare, I hold him by the base oif the tail and let him rest his paws on my hand. usually if you hold them close to your body, they won't be scared. Its not scientifically proven, but it seems to work.

Hmm, I've had no problem securing the base of the tail on any of my chins except for this new guy Buster. He's fine when I'm holding him in my arms and I've got my fingers on his tail in case he bolts but the other night he was being rather bratty and I wanted to end playtime so I went to hold him by the base of the tail so I could pick him up an put him back in and he let out this ungodly scream and it freaked me out a bit. You'd think I was killing him. Maybe some chins react like this while others are fine? He seemed really really scared and when I did pick him up the poor guy was trembling. I did manage to calm him down though. :(
