What's the highest distance you'd consider safe in a cage? I've got a huge bird cage we were thinking of putting ledges in to convert to a chin cage but it's about as tall as me so over 5' from a wire floor to the top. I debated putting a choke point to prevent a fall the whole distance. It's got a flat center bar running around the middle for support that we could bolt a lot of weight to so we could nearly cover the center in wood with a gap left and put ledges above and below it. Rather than just putting ledges all the way from bottom to top. It would work kind of like the double stacked critter and ferret nation cages then.

I try to make sure there is no way for them to fall more then about a foot. Overlapping ledges and shelves as well as hammocks to prevent a fall too far. That might be a little over board but I'd rather be safe then sorry, it's just too big of a chance that they decided to go crazy and miss a ledge.

I always make sure my ledges are overlapping just for safety in my larger cages. If they choose to jump further, I can't stop them, but I prefer for them to be safe if I can help it!

I'd definitely put something in the middle, as well as over lapping ledges/hammocks. My cages are only about 3 feet high, but my boys can only fall about a foot max.

The problem with overlapping shelves is that we can only get 8" pine boards at the maximum and the cage is well over 16" in length. I can't get any other wood but cedar here. If we could do shelves using plywood then it wouldn't be a problem but the glue used to make plywood is a concern in chewing animals. We could try using brackets to bolt 2, 8" boards together but I'm not sure even 16" shelves would overlap, I'd have to measure the cage, and it might be too much weight. There aren't a lot of horizontal bars for stability.
