Im delighted to find a furry forum dedicated to my little friends. I have 2 chinchies and having a little trouble. i dont know anyone else who has a chinch so Im very eager to swap info and get advice if possible. my little king is Nivvy- he's 3 and neutered. He is pink beige with spotty ears and we have had him since he was a little kit. Recently we got him a little friend- a female of 7months called Pookie. She is a beautiful charcoal and very sweet. We tried to introduce them after an 8 week settling period and quarantine but it went very badly:help:

Hi Pantouffe and welcome to the forum! I'm sorry your intro didn't go better...I personally have a chin who doesn't get along with any others and has to remain caged to herself. Some chins accept a buddy and some don't. Hopefully you'll get the answers you need here as there are a lot of knowledgeable chin owners who love to share what they know :)

wow! That was quick! hi everyone! Thanks for the info and the kind words. Im afraid it doesnt look good for my pair to be a pair. He bit her finger off in the first minute-through a cage... Poor baby is still bleeding and im trying not to dislike him but its hard as she is such a sweetie and he has lately become a nipping little brat even before we got her.

Unfortunately, there's never a guarantee that any two chins will get along, whether it's same or opposite sex. Some chins are just meant to stay single, and they are pretty happy that way, especially if their humans interact with them regularly. Try not to dislike him for what comes naturally to him (and believe me, I know how hard this is). He was being territorial and he took it out on her. Luckily, it was just a toe through a cage, it could have been much worse.

He has never seen another chinchilla so I guess it was a shock. Will she recover and forget how he hurt her? should we attempt a reintroduction(with a fine mesh screen this time?)

I would keep them apart for a couple weeks and then start over again. Chins lose toes a LOT, so it shouldn't be horribly traumatic for her (provided it was a clean bite, no infection, etc.). Let them forget about each other for a little while, then try again. :)

thanks Tunes. I was worried that as blood was drawn-it meant there was no hope. He has cuddle teddies so I was sure he wanted his own live warm fuzzy. She is such a cute and friendly baby that I cant believe he could be so horrible. I will try again once she has healed, more carefully. She was badly frightened though- just lay down in her sandbowl and cried. Broke my heart!

Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that. I'm in the middle of a quarantine myself and I am anxiously nervous/excited about the first time I will introduce them to each other. I hope it goes well. And good luck next time around. Welcome :)
