Hi I am Laura I have 4 chinchillas one of which recently lost her leg it was very sad. Last night we found a mating plug from our oldest girl and noticed that she had some dried up blood around her vagina. There was no excess bleeding but tonight there is still dried blood. Is this unusual, or normal after mating? I read somewhere that tearing can happen, should I take her to the vet? Please help.

Sometimes there is a little bleeding after mating. It isn't a huge deal as long as the bleeding stops completely very shortly after the mating occurs. Bleeding becomes a concern later into the pregnancy as it can indicate miscarriage or that there is another problem.

I'm sorry to hear about your chin losing a leg. She'll be fine, chins are highly adaptable critters.

My chinchilla last her leg at about 5 weeks old, she was running on a wheel we had that was mesh and had a bar holding it from the center and we assume that one of the other chinchillas got on and pushed her so that her leg got caught on that connection bad, we found her in the morning with the bone poking out of her little leg. the vet said they could have saved it if she was older. We have bad luck with leg injuries though and I would have still asked them to amputate since chinchillas with casts are not easy critters.
