Hi there, my name is Heather and I live in Utah, and work full time as a Veterinary Assistant/Pet Groomer for my father who is a veterinarian. I recently adopted 2 adult chinchillas, Salt (White w/blue eyes), and Pepper (Black Velvet). They are around 1 year old. They are not my first chinchilla's I've had multiple in the past but my last one died about 6 years ago, Baby, whom was one that I bottle fed, he was found in a park with 2 kids playing catch with him when he was only a few days old. I have many waiting at the bridge, most were rescues, Bonnie, Clyde (standard greys), Annie (white with silver tail), Oakley (beige), Jesse (black velvet) and Baby (standard grey) all waiting at the bridge. I've also had several hedgehogs in the past, Hillary, Henry and Spike, Hillary was an albino, and Henry and Spike were just the standard color. They were rescues as well.

Anyways for Salt and Pepper, my sister works at Petco and someone brought them in because they didn't want them any more, she already had 1 chinchilla so decided to take them home. I saw them and they were/had been slightly nervous with her, but Pepper jumped right into my hand. It was love at first site! My sister was willing to part with them if I could convince my hubby to let me have them. That was around Sept 10th. Well I kept showing my hubby their adorable pictures and tried to convince him that I needed them (should add that hubby was NOT an animal person before we met). My birthday was Sept 25th, so he calls me at work 30 minutes before I left and tells me I can bring home the "rats" as he was affectionately calling them until he met them lol. So hubby spent the night (he works graves so is up all night), researching about them on the internet, and decided that their cage was inadequate as it was too small, and had only a wire bottom it was one level and not very big at all, so he took me to get them supplies on/for my birthday, we got them a HUGE cage, it's taller than me! They got a new exercise wheel as they wore out the bearings on their old one from mileage, then a bin feeder, new hay rack, a bigger dust bath house, and a big huge ball for them to run around in. This was all stuff he learned! I'm so proud of him! We are both smitten, and he is saying that 'hey' our cage is big enough for a baby or we could even split it in half and they'd still have 3 different levels each...he really wants to see a baby chin. LOL One day I will own another hedgie as I miss owning them, hubby has already 'tentatively' okayed it.

I am also owned by 2 Chihuahuas, 1 Golden Retriever, 3 Cats, 1 RES Turtle, and 6 Lovebirds.

Hi and Welcome to CnH, I look forward to hearing all about your pair and maybe some pics. I must tell you though that those balls are bad for chins, mostly because they overheat and get heatstroke easily in them. Do a search on here and you'll see. Theresa

Totally missed the runabout ball comment. My only excuse is I was holding my eyelids open with toothpicks. :)

Definitely ditch the runabout ball. They are completely unsafe for chins. Think sauna, fur coat, covered with pee and poop. That's literally what it is for a chin. Also, chins do not run, they hop. The ball is not conducive to their natural motion and is hard on their spines. They just aren't safe for chins.

Thank-you so much for the advice, I will definitely be tossing the runabout ball. Like I said it has been a long time since I have had chins, so I am relearning a lot. I will be getting them a different exercise wheel with my next payday. Should I have 2 Exercise wheels since I have 2 chins?
Here is the cage they came with:

And the cage they have now (I should add this picture was taken right after they had their first dust bath in their new dust house, the dust bath does not stay in the cage). We are looking into different shelving options as the purple shelve they had in their old cage is chewed to bits, but they also did not have ANY type of chew things except the grey block to chew on.

You can turn the ball into a swing. Throw away both end covers. Drill a hole in the top, add a chain and a hook, throw a fleece bed in the ball, and they will love it. At least that way you won't have wasted your money.

You can have two wheels if you want, but one is okay too. With the wheel you have now, it's possible they are going to chew it and the wheel will fall. Provided there is no chin under it, it's no big deal. But, if there is a chin under it, it becomes a hazard because of breathing. That's not to be a nervous nellie, but I just left a dust bath in the other day (missed it when collecting) and for some reason I got an odd feeling. Picked it up and there was a chin underneath. They could easily get out from under it, and I don't know why they don't, but they just curl up in a ball and wait. That happens with those wheels too when they fall. The chin gets trapped underneath. Keep an eye on that center spoke to be sure the pin that holds it in isn't getting chewed.

The best wheels, truly, are the solid surface metal wheels, whether it's an actual wheel or a flying saucer. There's nothing there for them to destroy and they last pretty much forever.

Thanks for the idea of the ball...that will ease my hubbys disappointment some that sucker was expensive. (well for my hubby anyways, he's still learning that pets cost money), for me I have no skin kids yet so I tend to spoil my critters as if they were my kids. We are going to get a different wheel, the one they had (green/white one) had a huge section chewed out of it. I will keep an eye on the wheel for chewing.

I bought an exercise ball also, then learned they weren't safe. Not sure if you saved the packaging, but I returned my exercise ball quite easily at Petsmart.
