Hi

My parents's/mom's chin Romeo is sick today, she phoned me and she told me that he can't walk and that his legs are lose and that he won't eat, she also noticed that he has a small ball inside his belly, like the size of a dollar coin, and that if she touches a bit, he would squeak in pain, and that he has also lost weight, around 50-70 grams, I brought him to my parents about 3 weeks ago, so I could have some more room in my house, and he was completely healthy, and fine, and in a good mood, now, we don't know how all the sudden he got sick and so fast, I have never heard of a chin getting sick with these signs, and with something in the belly, so don't know what it could be, any thoughts?

thanks

Why post here? Go to the vet. There is nothing we can do for you. He sounds like he's very ill and he needs to go see a vet.

He didn't get sick all of a sudden - 70 gm in weight loss doesn't happen overnight.

I agree...go to the vet.

It could most definitely be a bladder problem. A round ball about that size sounds like an overextended bladder due to a stone or infection. You need to take the chin to the vet to see what can be done to help him get that urine out.

I suppose it could be something else...but if the round, hard ball is in the lower abdomen, it could definitely be something with his bladder. At this point you cannot wait or he WILL die...he's in an extremely, amazingly large amount of pain. You can't do anything at home right now to remedy it.

Hi

Of course I would bring him to the vet, but I posted here in the case someone knew what it was or has gone through an experience like that, and give some advice if possible

I meant all the sudden because losing that weight in about 3 weeks is very fast, of course it didn't happen overnight, but my mom was able to notice it today.

Oh no, his bladder, I wonder how could this happen to him, he was fine about 3 weeks ago and no signs of any illness or anything, that's why it is very surprising, I am phoning my mom now and tell her to call the vet, hopefully we can get him in because of the weekend.

Yes, the ball is in his lower abdomen, just phoned the emergency service and they are going to get a vet to phone my mom's house and help them out, I am hoping that everything works out good for him,

There is squat a vet is going to be able to do by phone, that chin needs a emergency vet NOW, the ball also could be a expanded intestine from bloat which could come of fast since the chin has obviously not been eating, so either bladder or intestine this chin will be dead very soon without care from a VET in his OFFICE, not over the net and not by phone.

Oh no, I believe they phone and then they should get him in to the vet office, that's what they told me at the vet emergency service, because I called their office and it was closed for the weekend and they said to phone other number if there was an emergency so that's what I did, now I am just waiting for an update on my mom soon. I want to make sure he gets to see the vet today,

I already told her and gave her the number for the vet and everything, I am hoping that she gets an visit to see the vet soon since it's the weekend, I have never seen a chin with an illness like that, and my mom was very scared because she hadn't either, it is not a very common illness on chins, the thing of the little ball in his belly and that he can't walk, I was really worried.

If you are going to breed you need to have a emergency vet that is avaliable 24/7/365, what if this was a chin who had a complication during birth? Would you just wait until Mom and Kit were dead since there is apparently no emergency vet around? This chin is in PAIN, at least take it to a regular vet and have it euthanized, you can't just let it suffer. You really need to rethink breeding, between Jade not getting proper vet care and losing a ton of weight in your care and this chin not getting vet care and losing a ton of weight you are being very unfair to chins.

Could just be my mood but I would be really surprised if this chinchilla actually got any help. Seems to be a developing pattern here

I do have a vet that is available 24/7, every day of the week, and this chin is in Sudbury, not in Timmins with me, I can only call my mom and help make the arrangements to get the chins to the vet, but I cannot make her do it super fast if I am not right there to help, I think she is going to go today, my dad is not around, and she wasn't sure if to go yesterday, because my dad is working out of the country, and is not at home to take her to the vet and pay for the vet bill, my mom doesn't have a visa card either, she just has my dad's debit card, and she has to ask my dad if she can spend the money for him, during the week it would be of course cheaper, but still, she is doing the best she can, it's not her intention to let him suffer. Also, this little boy wasn't on the breeding program, he has never been bred, because of his size, he was a pet chin for the moment, so no, I am not breeding all my chins I have, and of course if I had an emergency right here with me, I would bring them to the vet, the vets in Timmins are available as well for emergency.

The point was not if this chin is a breeder or not, the point is she and you are breeding and it appears if things go wrong these chins are not getting vet care, I will repeat my question you avoided, if one of her females had a birthing complication that required a C cection, would that chin still be sitting at home and waiting for vet care after 2 days ? If the answer is no than its sad you treat pet chins different than breeder chins, and if the answer is yes, you really need to rethink breeding.

And anyway, I hope the chin gets care since that is the most important thing and I hope you can right things in the future in case things like this happen again.

My question would be, with your mother having the majority of the pet chinchillas (as you've mentioned in a previous post) why is SHE not prepared for an emergency with chinchillas? Quite obviously these kinds of things can and will happen whether you are breeding or not. Your mother as a pet owner needs to understand a sick chinchilla will be a dead chinchilla if immediate vet care is not sought out, you as a breeder need to be more proactive about making sure a chinchilla you bred gets vet care and doesn't die.

My mom is two and a half hours from me. She doesn't have chins at the moment but plans on keeping a same sex pair in the future. If she called me with a problem like this I would send her to my vet and if she didn't want to go, I would drive there, get the chin and take it to the vet. They are VERY fragile animals. I'm going to second what Ticklechin said and suggest you rethink breeding completely. If you love the animal you do NOT have to breed it. You are not bettering the species and you have way too little experience to even deal with small, common medical problems in the chins you've sent to other people.

No, if I had a chin with me that needed the C-section I would take her to the vet, and if I had another chin that had another emergency I would take them to vet as well, but in this case, I cannot make my mom go to the vet if she doesn't want to, so I cannot answer for her, I try to help as much as I can, but I am not right there with her like I said before, and I don't treat my pet chins differently compared to my breeding chins, to me they are the same, and now my mom is telling that she really can't handle it and that she is suffering with this happening, so I have to make a plan to sell around 20 of my chins and I am planning on posting an ad to make a sale for them so they go to a new home sooner, but I also want to make sure they go to a good place, I might have more people inquiring for them if I sell them cheaper, but I will take my time in rehoming them and let them go to a good loving home,

The chins that are with me are doing good, and I have had a few situations where I did have to bring them to the vet, and I did, even if it was small, but my mom and my sisters don't seem to be able to know what to do exactly with them, so I am going to try to get that load off them. They know how to take care of them and clean them and feed them, and they go check out on them everyday to make sure they are alright, which is the basics, but really, it's not easy for them to handle when a chin is sick like that.
