I'm happy to have found a forum on chinchillas. I recently lost a chin I had gotten from Petsmart. I was heartbroken after losing him. He was a sweet beige male named Mickey. I miss him terribly. I only had him a week and a half. He was rushed back to Petsmart to see their vet after I found him on the bottom of the cage hardly breathing. I held him all the way to the store before they took him from me. I don't know for sure if he died, they wouldn't tell me. But he looked horrible before they took him back. They didn't even say they were sorry my baby was sick. My poor boy was held in my arms as I had to stand in line to check him into the vet. I don't think the managers cared one way or another. They just wanted to get me out of the store. I assume my boy died, he was so weak...his cagemate was taken back as well. I didn't feel comfortable keeping him knowing his cagemate was so sick. I expressed my concerns and hope they have him checked out by their vet. I had taken both chinchillas to my own vet a week earlier and he gave them a clean bill of health. He is an exotics vet. I don't know what happened to my poor boy :(. I'm just so angry. I should have known better than to buy from a pet store and support their company. I just fell in love with the two chins they had. I will be calling my vet in the morning and telling him what happened, hopefully he can shed somelight on the situation for me. I will never shop at this store again, nor purchase animals from a pet store. I am currently looking into finding a breeder to purchase a chinchilla from. At least then I will know the animal is healthy :(
