Well I've been meaning to get on here for quite some time and Kelly from Mystic Mosiacs finally got me here as I needed to find a new supplier for PANR.
I have a female chinchilla, Tonks, who is 3 years old as of Monday (the 17th). She is a standard grey and quite tiny (only about 550 grams I think according to her last vet visit), but healthy as can be. She's a little too smart for her own good. For instance taking the lid off her own dustbath (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Og6zgr8pVFw)...and also knowing how to get to the top of her Townhouse cage to get to it. She is about as weird as chinchillas get...something I have heard from quite a few breeders now, lol. She ate chicken (no I did not give it to her), she was stealing stir fry off my fiancee's plate without either of us realizing it because she would grab it and bolt three-legged. This was before I realized just how quick she was. Somehow she lived through my first few months as a new (and very naive) chinchilla mommy.
She does talk to me...she barks at the foot of my chair if I ignore her when she is out, and sits on my shoulder and makes little whining noises when she just wants love. I swear I actually speak her language now. Though the nightmare squeals still want to make me cry, fortunately they don't happen often. She absolutely adores my nephew who shares his glass of water with her (something that completely grosses me out). He sits on the floor with his laptop a lot and she sits as still as can be in the crook of his lap as he pets her, but as soon as he stops she jumps all over the keyboard and blocks the monitor with her big fuzzy butt until he pets her again. She loves looking outside and loves it when it snows. We open the window just a crack for her in the winter time and she lays there in her own paradise. She's completely spoiled rotten and my only child. She knows minor commands like "Here, Tonks" and "Tonks, Home". I am hoping to train her with some more advanced commands as she definitely is smart enough, just stubborn. And as I type this she is doing her annoying run on her wheel to get my attention, haha, I take that as she says "Hi" too.
She did have a brother, who passed away shortly after he came home. I was a new chinchilla owner and in short trusted my chinchilla breeder a little too much.
I was very fortunate that my little Tonks ended up being such a healthy girl. I learned very quickly the hard ways of caring for a chin.
I live in an apartment and she practically has her own bedroom. I had bunnies and hamsters in the past and when I was moving I knew I wanted a pet that had some personality and lived longer than 3-8 years. My apartment agreed to allow a chinchilla as they are odor free (yes chinchilla is in my lease, so I will never have a problem keeping her), so that was what brought me to them. I am a chinchilla lover for life now, lol. I am actually considering fostering (or adopting, as I got rid of my old futon so now have room to keep their cage at the separate side of her room) to try her again with other pets. I am hoping for her to at least have playmates for free time. She seemed to grieve over her brother, but that was two years ago, and I am hoping that she may be ready again. I would love for her to have a little pack to play with as she is pretty active and only has a little Winnie the Pooh to cuddle with. I don't think I could ever breed though, I would want to keep them all, lol!
So that's that I guess...I hope that's a fairly decent introduction
