Hello everyone,

My husband offered me a 4-month old chinchilla for my birthday. I always loved those cute little furry creatures but I have to say that I am a little worried I'm doing the right things to make him happy. He lets me put my hand in the cage no problem and day-3 today he took some hay and oat from my hand. I have been reading to him 20 minutes every night and I talk to him in the morning when I feed him and spot clean his cage.
He's a little jumpy which is normal since he doesn't know us yet.

My husband and I work from home and it's only the 2 of us... with Henri now :)
We put the cage in the dining room-kitchen area for the time being but I don't think it is the best for him. (my husband is out of town for the moment but he is rather noisy and play drums in the basement so I think it would be better to move the cage as far as possible to potential pound noise).

I wanted to put him in my office with me. I worked behind a computer with no phone ringing, no music and I occasionally call on Skype/phone (maybe a few times a week). I get up and walk out of the room once every hour to use the restroom. This room is also where I use my sewing machine on weekend, craft and do my relaxation exercises. I leave the room from 7.00pm to the following morning. To sum up my work environment is what I would consider very quite.

I thought of the bedroom at first but I am a light sleeper and Henri loves his wheel and playing with his different toys at night.

Do you think Henri would be happy here in my office? or would my presence disturb him during the day while he sleeps? Shall I put him in the bedroom and wear earplugs?

I want my little buddy to be as happy as possible and that we can bond as much as possible. I've been reading so many different things that it worries me a little.

Thank you very much in advance!

Welcome! He should be fine in your office. You will notice he does not sleep all day long. My girls are in my bedroom and they have never been bothered by my coming and going on the weekends. I clean during their normal sleeping hours and they don't pay me any attention.

You don't have to tiptoe around him. I think he would be happy spending time with you during the day. Just be sure to give him some evening time too. Welcome, it sounds like you are off to a great start!

Mine are in the living room, ours is not a quiet house, they are fine. Congratulations! He is just going to be a silly, spazzy boy for many months/years to come

Hi and welcome!

I have my 6 year old chinnie in my dining room with a loud Quaker Parrot, 3 parakeets, a Doberman and chihuahua who can get quite vocal if excited, and two boys, who definitely get very vocal and over-energetic at times. My chin does fine with all of the noise and excitement. I think too close to a drum may be a bit much, but anywhere else in the house should be fine. My chin even comes up to check out the vacuum cleaner when I am running it! I agree that the bedroom isn't the best place, otherwise your chin may keep you up at night. But, as already stated, I find my chin up periodically during the day with me, as well as up and down during the night. It sounds like you are off to a great start. It takes a bit of time and patience to gain your chinnie's trust and to fully bond, but the rewards are so worth it!

Thank you very much everyone!
I highly appreciate. I moved Henri to my office yesterday night.
I think it will be the most comfortable spot for him (and us sleeping-wise).
Thanks to your testimonies and your pieces of advice I fell more relaxed.
I wish you all a wonderful day!
Helene and Henri

Hi Helene,

Welcome to you and Henri! He'll be just fine in his new spot.

Chins adapt their patterns around you. Our little girl, Lola, wakes us up every morning at 5 for cleanup and playtime and usually sleeps off and on during the day on week days. On the weekend she somehow knows we are home and bangs around and rings her bell on her kabob to let us know she wants attention.

Enjoy getting to know your new addition.

Henri is very lucky to have someone so concerned about him. Over the years we have had our chinchilla in various situations and they always seem to adjust very well. How lucky are you to be able to work at home and enjoy him all day. Welcome
