Hi, I am Tammy from Manitoba, Canada. I have resuced my 1st hedgehog from a local country petshop. Seeing her in the conditions she was in just killed me. I am going to need all the help I can get as hedgehogs are truly new to me. I have taken her to the vet and she had to be knocked out to have her nails trimmed as she has never been regularly handled and her nails were already embedded in her paws. She has been this way for a while and now that I have got them trimmed (has been only a week), I have noticed that she hasn't been walking normally (i don't think) as she really dosen't use one of her back legs very well and her hind end just dosen't look right when she moves. She does get around and is in no pain that I can see. I am not sure if it still might be healing or because she has not had sufficent space to do any excercise. I truly want to make her happy and healthy, but not sure of all that i can do for her. She has a wheel right now in her cage (she has not at all tried it - but maybe because she has been a tad bite crippled from bad nails and no excersice) I am going to have a lot of questions so please bare with me in the future.

It might be from lack of exercise or perhaps she's just not used to walking with such finely trimmed nails. Anyhow, welcome to the club. Hope to see pictures of your new girl. :D

Welcome and good luck with the new cutie :) Give her time with the wheel, mine took a good week before she would touch it, and then I have a suspicion that she was just standing on it and not actually running most of the time lol. Try outside the cage play time, maybe she'll be happy to just wander around a bit, you never know what they're gonna like. (Just make sure the floor is cleanish, nothing sharp to step on, you know like baby-proofing :p)

Welcome to CnH! :))

Your poor girl, I can only imagine the pain she was in with the embedded nails.
