I am new to chinchillas and was wondering how much timothy hay/ alfalfa cubes I should buy at a time? How long does it usually last before going bad? I will have 2 baby chins, how much hay will they eat????

I think it all depends on the chins. My 2 boys will eat 2-3 hands full of timothy a day, my 2 girls will eat a lot less. I also offer them alfalfa cubes, but usually they will just nibble on cubes and leave the rest of it there, a few times I found the left over cubes in their litter box, I think they were trying to tell me something..LOL~
You can buy a small bag of timothy hay to start, and see how much your chins will eat per day, then go from there. Also, store your hay in a cool dry place without direct sunshine will help keep it last longer without going bad. Good luck. =^_^=

If you ask horse owners they will tell you that you can feed hay that is two years old as long as it was stored properly. It may lose some nutritional value but, timothy hay is more about fiber content. Your pellets should cover everything else.

Now obviously, we all want the best for our furkids so, we want to give them "fresh" stuff. I agree that your best bet is to just start small. You will soon find that those small bags from the petstore are expensive and not usually the best quality. It didn't take me long to upgrade to a 5lb box, then 9, and now 25. I try to buy an amount that will last me 4-6 months. They have there own ways of telling you when it's time to buy new hay also. Like not eating it or redecorating with it. LOL
