Hi all,
We have an adopted chinchilla called Chilli. We adopted her just over 2 years ago and was told she was about 2.5 years old. We'd not had her long when she started drooling and since then we've had an ongoing battle with tooth spurs. Thankfully we have a good exotic vet and x-rays didn't show anything too alarming. Her gums and teeth were in a bad way though and she has lost two gum teeth. We are also having to take her back regularly for filing.
Otherwise she is a good weight and healthy, she has no problem with her front teeth and likes to nibble just about everything when she is out.
Since we've had her she has never eaten hay, we've tried Timothy and something the vet recommended called Readigrass. We live in the UK and provisions for chins is a little limited.
Can anyone recommend anything at all that might help grind down Chilli's back teeth? One of the vets suggested dried herbs but I'm not sure what is safe. Should we limit her pellets or not? Her weight was low for a long time so I'm a bit reluctant to do this.
Any suggestions would be very welcome. I suspect we will be back at the vets regularly with her spurs and I'd really like to try and reduce the visits if at all possible as it's always a worry when we have to put her under aneasthetic.
Thanks!
