What is the kinda of hay holder that works best for you?

When I fist got chinchillas a just had the hay in a bowl which worked ok, but it usually ended up stattered with in a few hours. Then I got hay ball rack things which worked wonderfully for about two months. So what do you use that keeps the hay in one general location.... me and my vacuum thank you all!

I like my hay racks the best; I purchased them from Quality Cage. They hang on the outside of the cage and the chins pull the hay through the bars.

^^ How do those do for keeping the hay off the floor?

I use terra cotta pots, and I cut the hay into like 3-4 inch length before putting it in. Only one of them now makes a mess with it. I think no matter what he will make a mess all over :)

I have the pot secured to the cage with those spring things

Ceramic flower pots (plain, no paint or gloss) work best here. They are super cheap. Hay might get scattered in the cage, but I do not have a problem with it getting all over the floor. Also. I cut my hay before putting it in the cage. That way it is easier for them to pull out. When it is all tangled, they pull it out and make a mess. There is always going to be a little mess, but it does help a lot!

I make wooden hay boxes that hang on the outside for my house chins, much less mess! And they can just pull it through the wires.

Someone had posted a link to some really nice hay holders. I think it was a bunny site. I tried to find it one day but couldn't. Maybe someone else remembers?

I have 3 different hay holders in each of my 3 cages, and I can say for sure that the holder that hooks to the outside of the cage makes the least amount of mess. Another problem that I have with the ones inside the cage is that the chins will sometimes use them as a potty, when they are full of hay. :vomit: Then of course I have to dump that hay.

I use a small bowl, about 3 inches in diameter. My husband made a clip to keep it attached to the side of her cage. I keep it right next to her food bowl. Like others here, I cut it up before putting it in. It does get on the shelf where it sits, but as I wipe down that shelf daily, it being her eating and drinking area, it is not a big issue for me.

... You do, do you? I may take you up on that. What do they look like? are there pics on your site? cause if there are they are super sneaky!

i might have to buy one cause i had the hay ball and some other kind of hay holder and its like once they took two pieves out it was all on the floor

Both of our chinnies make a game out of pulling out hay in order to find just the perfect piece. *sigh* They do have hay holders on the sides of the cages but they yank out every single piece. What seems to be working better at this time is using a fleece hammock so they just climb into the middle and pull out what they want, then I can pull out the tiny pieces each day and replace it with new hay. No matter what, it's always a big old mess!

I really swear by my hay bags I make. They're pretty much little pouches. I do not have any mess from them, as the fleece holds the hay in very well and the chins have fun reaching in to get the hay. They're cheap, easy to empty and to wash and there are so many designs to choose from!

The hay balls work fine for me. I find that if you really pack it in, they'll just chew what they want out. As soon as it gets loose, I put more in.
