What do you guys use as a hay holder? I tried to do a search but couldn't come up with much. I thought about ordering one of those hay holders that has the chinchilla cut out on it. Not sure though...

So, I'd like opinions please.

:)

I use a coconut with the sides cut off as you can see in the picture below. I attach it to the cage using a bolt and some washers through the holes you normally drill to get the milk out.

Sorry for the average picture but I don't have a current one with it actually attached to the cage.

i use a terra cotta pot.
some use wood hay holders.
some use hay bags..
like ****oo said the list goes on

I use a coffee mug attached to his cage but he pulls it out and its all over the place within seconds lol

Most of my wooden hay holders end up as their potty and have had to throw them out after awhile. Now I just set the hay on top of anywhere... shelf, hidey house, hammock, etc.

Thanks for the input so far & thanks for the picture Peaches. :) I'm just trying to figure out what works best I guess. I have their new fleecey items to put in & I just wanted some way to kind of keep the hay under control so that its not all over the fleece. I don't believe there will ever be FULL control of the hay.. but, trying to keep it at least off of the fleece for a little while, that may be worth a try.. haha. My girls like to sort thru the hay... dig thru it, pick out the ones with the tops still on them, eat those first.. & toss the little nubs of hay down once they get done with them. Haha. So, yeah... just kind of looking at what other's use & like. :)

I use large ceramic bowls. They like to sit in them and eat, which entertains me to no end, of course. :))

haha i know what you mean Gus Gus sticks half his body into the mug to try to get out all the pieces its hillarious

You can find coconuts just about any big chain grocery store, but I will warn you, they are NOT fun to clean, and good luck with not cracking them when getting the meat out. I'm married to an islander, and even I buy my coconuts to use for the chins. lol
You can find them on ebay too.

I tried a bunch of different holders, but the thing that works best (for me, anyway) are these little fleece bags I made for them. They pull hay out the top or out the bottom hole. I used to put the hay bags above a fleece-covered shelf, which really "grabbed" any dropped hay, so it wasn't scattered all over the cage and floor. I've since gotten rid of the fleece shelves, but the bags still seem to be the least messy option I've tried to date.

Ronda sells coconuts with three holes drilled in them. But be careful!!! I had one hanging in my 6 month old's cage and he got his head stuck in a hole and I found him hanging by the neck (he's fine), so if you do get one put it where they can have their feet on something at all angles.

Those are cute. :) I wonder how well something like that would work with my girls.. haha, they would probably pull every piece out to get the tops of they hay, then it would just be a mess.. they'll probably do that with ANY kind of holder I get. I may be fighting a losing battle here.. hmm. :hmm: Haha.

Aw, poor baby! Glad he is okay! Anything with any kind of possibility of injury is out. I'm waaay too paranoid. Like majorly paranoid. Every hay thing I'm like 'they could probably somehow fit down inside of that & get stuck' , or 'I can see them wall surfing the cage and landing head first into this hay holder and being stuck with their bottoms up in the air til I can get back home' . I think too much.
