Do I need to feed Mama only Timothy hay? She is used to Orchard Grass but I switched her over after Bean was born.

She is definitely eating it but there is SO MUCH waste with the Timothy! I can get Oxbow Timothy (or Kaytee) not sure about other brands locally or shipped.

The reason you want to give Timothy over the other hays is because it's a coarser hay. You may notice that Orchard grass is a much softer hay - and so it doesn't wear down their molars the way a coarser hay like Timothy would. We actually give ours farm hay that's a mix of timothy, alfalfa, orchard grass, and rye. I personally love it, because it gives them a little bit of everything - the coarse stuff, the softer stuff, and everything in between. A lot of my chins love the orchard grass... but if I gave them just that, I would worry about their teeth, so they all get the timothy mix, and orchard grass (by itself) as a treat only.

Before we switched to bales of hay, we used Oxbow. That was a much bigger hit with the chins than Kaytee or any of the other brands.

I'd also give her alfalfa hay. It's rich in nutrients, and it stimulates milk production :))

Thanks!!!

Oddly enough, I put her hay in a glass mason jar yesterday (which I hadn't done before b/c I was afraid the baby would get on it, fall off and hurt herself) and she ate most of it! Yay!

I will look for alfalfa hay today at our local pet store. They are very good, I love them.
