We've got four horses, two grade paint mix mares, Toots and Diamond, a 1/2 quarter horse 1/4 Arab and 1/4 Thoroughbred gelding, Dan, and then my registered stock paint gelding, Hawk. Well, we've been training Toots, and decided today to bring her up to the other three horses, seeing as she's been alone most of the summer while we trained her.
So, we drove her up there, working on her turns and gait transitions from a walk to a trot and down to a walk again. When we let her go with the other horses they ran and messed around for a couple of minutes. Before we left however, Hawk left the other three and started towards the gate where we were standing, and stopped in front of me. I slipped under the fence to give him his loving, like he wanted, and had to grin.
Here's why I grinned, Toots is Hawk's mare, he doesn't let anyone push her around, not even the alpha gelding or alpha mare, but he left her to come and see me. He values my companionship so much that he would leave his herd to come and say hi. I've had him for four years now, and each year has been a delight owning this big boy!
Here's a picture of me and him, he's about 17 hands tall, and I'm only 5'4"!!
