I walked into the chinchilton this morning later than usual. In one of the cages where I have two pregnant females (male was shut out the day before yesterday since one of the females is bred back) i saw that one of the girls had littered. My heart sank when I saw two kits under mom and a third just off to the right lying stiffly. I pulled him out and as I did I heard the faintest squeak out of him. He was cold and quite stiff. Stuck him in my bra (sorry if this is TMI) and rushed him indoors where I held him over the heater vent. I did not think he was alive and was not sure that squeak was not my imagination or maybe even a squeak from one of the two other kits (that I had not yet checked). Long story short he started breathing, then squeaking faintly, the he became more malleable (less stiff), then the little feet started to move, and finally the eyes opened. My husband rushed me a towel that was freshly run in the dryer and the two of us had our morning coffee with X1 on the table struggling to make his way out of the towel we had wrapped him in.
I am happy to report that X1 is now happily reunited with his mom, his auntie, X2, and X3. Mom had just passed the after birth as I watched to make sure she will not reject him.
