I walked into the chinchilton this morning later than usual. In one of the cages where I have two pregnant females (male was shut out the day before yesterday since one of the females is bred back) i saw that one of the girls had littered. My heart sank when I saw two kits under mom and a third just off to the right lying stiffly. I pulled him out and as I did I heard the faintest squeak out of him. He was cold and quite stiff. Stuck him in my bra (sorry if this is TMI) and rushed him indoors where I held him over the heater vent. I did not think he was alive and was not sure that squeak was not my imagination or maybe even a squeak from one of the two other kits (that I had not yet checked). Long story short he started breathing, then squeaking faintly, the he became more malleable (less stiff), then the little feet started to move, and finally the eyes opened. My husband rushed me a towel that was freshly run in the dryer and the two of us had our morning coffee with X1 on the table struggling to make his way out of the towel we had wrapped him in.

I am happy to report that X1 is now happily reunited with his mom, his auntie, X2, and X3. Mom had just passed the after birth as I watched to make sure she will not reject him.

X1 Standard v/c male 50 grs.
X2 Violet female 52 grs.
X3 Black Velvet male 50 grs.

LOVE THAT I GOT ALL THE POSSIBILITIES THIS PAIRING CAN PRODUCE IN ONE LITTER

Dam: Lo bred by me York 1A animal
Sire: Ritterspach tov Violet male

WHAT A GREAT WAY TO START THE X YEAR!!!

Congrats on reviving the little one! And no worries, I too have stuffed kits down my shirt to keep them warm. Can't wait to see pictures soon. It sounds like a beautiful litter.

correction

happiness makes me stupid.

these are not ALL the possibilities this pairing can produce of course. i did not get a tov violet (unless the violet turns out to be a tov and then i did not get a violet) but still - LOVE THE VARIETY!

Congrats on the trio! I've been told my hands are always warm/hot and have "revived" a few, just by holding them! Seems almost miraculous this can be done so easily, and gives you a sense of accomplishment!

Congrats Shelli on your little one's. And such a wonderful genetic variety. How exciting! So glad to hear the little kit made it. Thanks for posting the "ASAP" warming tips. Looking forward to seeing pictures of all the kits. Don't make us wait long. lol

Congrats Shelli! I can't believe she was hiding 3 good sized ones in there, I know that was a surprise for you. I hope they settle in with mom and do really well :)

thanks all.

yup cory,
you and me both. she did not look THAT big and did not look miserable at all. just glad i got there when i did and will give her lotsa time to settle before i mess with picture and such.

Ha, I don't know what my boyfriend would do if I went running with a kit in my bra. Good quick thinking though:thumbsup:.

Congrats! Can't wait for pics!

thanks.

that is just one of the benifits of having been married for 21 years. he has seen it all and just roles his eyes and makes himself useful. lol.

sigh

the three are fighting and mom looks ticked at them. i guess i should be happy that they are all strong enough to fight but i see possible rotating/hand-feeding in my future...

So glad things turned out well! That little squeak is the best noise in the world, huh? What a great trio. Pictures?

oh yay shelli! good weights on them and lovely colors to beat. Ugh, well maybe when mom's milk gets going good they will settle down. Congrats!! Will you be keeping all of those cuties??

update

ok. first night went well. female kept her weight, bfd (back from the dead) standard dropped one gram and the little black is down 4 grams but his weight was not accurate since he was still moist.

mom looks very grouchy.

volunteerchin22 - yeah, love it when they are nice and chunky like that. only thing better would have been twins and same sex so i can wean them together (can you tell i am getting greedy here?). i too love it when i get a litter were no two are alike.

doubt i can keep any of them.

update and pictures (sorta)

when will i learn not to sex kits unless i have a jewelers loop with me?
my little BFTD (back from the dead) kit is a female not a male. she and the little black are holding their weights while the violet is gaining (she is at mom ALLLLLL the time). the little black had his eyes sealed this afternoon (see my post and help if you can) so i hope he will be ok. he was very aggressive yesterday.

so, pictures i took which won't show you much but i don't want to disturb mom (she looks like i feel more often than not)

first BFTD up front

little black v/c peeking under mom (and big sis violet is ALWAYS there)

and finally mom looking overwhelmed and the violet pig always there...

At least so far you've just had kits you thought were males end up to be females so that is a pleasant surprise vs. thinking they were females at first, lol. Poor momma, you're right in that last pic she looks like "what happened, why me? my life used to be so quiet". They are a really cute family though, hopefully once they sort out who gets what nipple they'll be less trouble for her.
