Hey guys!

I know there's a lot of info out there about hair rings, but one thing has always had me wondering... Chester won't even let him pick him up (he's just under 7 months, we've had him for 3 months), so how would I even check for hair rings? I read that you're only supposed to start checking after they're a year old - is that true? And if so, do I just wait and hope he's okay with me in 5 months time? I didn't know about hair rings when I got a male chin, and the whole thing just makes me a little nervous...

There is no set age when a chin can get a hair ring, a couple of months old to never getting one at all is the range. Its a good idea to tame chinchillas as soon as possible, it makes it easier to deal with when something happens and the chin needs to be hand fed and meds given.

Actually, turns out Chester is a girl, so I guess it's a non-issue..! Ha...

Still not sure how I feel about this new development lol

I've actually taken to calling him Bee or Lil Bee, which works for a female... But I've had him for 3 months, it feels weird to suddenly refer to him as HER.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that the people got it wrong. She was housed with a male (the father) before I got her, I should just feel lucky she's not pregnant. 4 months old is a little young to have babies though I guess..

I should check more often. When I see my male(s) grooming too long I try and have a peak when his penis is extended. Yesterday I saw Jesse working a little longer then I thought he should and I had a close look. Sure enough he had a hair ring. He's pretty good about staying still. I had to use liquid KY moving his sheath down. Was a bit difficult taking this hair ring off.

Jesse has very dense fur and he's had a couple over the years.
If you have a "spazz" chin just ask someone to help you or burrito him. The key is patience and taking your time. You don't want your males to think this is something to be dreaded. And I give out a small treat afterwards.
