Hair Ring

I just got a male chinchilla and so far have seen no signs of a hair ring. He dosent seem uncomfrtable and he dosent seem to be doing anything abnormal "Down there" Actually im not around alot when hes in his cage TOO much because i have school although i do sit with him once in a while and take him out every night for an hour and a half. Now while ive seen him in his cage i havent really seen him groom himself or pay too much attention anywhere near his penis. Will i be able to tell if there is a hair ring? Should i check. He struggles when i hold him but im positive hed freak if somebody he didnt no held him down and i no i wont be able to hold him with one hand and check with the other. I did hold him today and look alittle just to see if there was anything that looked abnormal. There wasnt. What im trying to ask is, if there are any big warning signs i should look for if he has a hair right. BTW he dosent have a mate and i read that lone male chinchillas usually clean themselves more.

you can do a burrito wrap to hold him still for a fur ring check. i'd wait until he is more comfortable and used to you though.

You can't always tell if a chinchilla has a hair ring. I still check my guys about once every month or two. Some get used to it, and others not so much, but you will probably get good at checking and it shouldn't take to long to do, and I can do it by myself but it won't hurt to have someone else hold him while you check, even if he doesn't know them. Just make sure they know how to safely hold a chin and not to hard.

My one male would get one all the time, but he was never in with a female.
He was very good about letting me cradle him on my lap between my legs wrapped in a hand towel.
I would moisten it with q-tips and it was easy to pull off from there. He was such a good boy for it. Hasn't had one in over a year though. Thank goodness.

Well i think ill let him get more use to me. He seems more social now. He goes up to anybody whos looking into his cage and stick his nose out and sniff them. Im hoping my mom will hold him down for me when im able to hold him without him freaking out x_x
