Hi all-

My male chinchilla is 4 months old, I got him about a month ago and have just recently learned that I need to do hair ring checks on him. I've attempted this twice so far and both times he was very squirmy and I didn't get very far. I've researched it and have seen a demo on how to do it, but in my practice it's been much more difficult to execute. Any advice on how to do it correctly? I don't think he has one, as he doesn't bite it excessively and he's just as lively as always, but I'd like to know for the future. Thanks a lot!

I doubt a 4 month old has a hair ring. They usually get it from humping another chin. It's not real common for a single chin to get a hair ring.

I don't do regular hair ring checks. If I notice something is off, then I do one. The other day I was cleaning cages, and when I do I pick the males up and give a quick look. It looked like one of the males had a bit fuller penis, so I did a hair ring check, found one, and removed it.
