My fiancée and I adopted a chin that was about 6 months old, he's now about 8 months old. We were told to put our arm in his cage until he got use to it. And then see if he'd take a treat. At first he got along great with my fiancée, and ignored me. Now he's all about me and won't go near my guy. Is this normal? I spend time with him every day, but it seems that I'm not making anymore progress. He'll let me scritch him and he'll rest his front paws on my hand, but never anything more. He'll also sometimes bark at me when I've not even moved. Might anyone have some suggestions? Or is this how it's going to be and I should get used to it? Oh, and he won't come out of his cage to have normal play time. He's got a 3' wide x 3' long x 4' high cage with a saucer. So I know he's getting exercise. I just worry that he's not getting enough, ya know?

Thanks for any help!

Chins develope trust at their own pace, some come around right away, some take a few years, some not at all. I tame by handling mine every day, works for me every time but unless you are very comfortable handling chins the more conventional way can work-the talk to, put the hand in the cage, the interaction at play time, the scritches etc. Two months is not long at all to expect any progress, and he is a teenager so that age can be difficult to deal with, when they get a year and a few months old they are easier to deal with in the trust department.
