My chin, cecil just started chewing his fur around the 4th of july and is still doing it. He has a big cage with plenty of toys, a house, and a wheel. But he still keeps chewing on his sides and it seems to be getting worse. I play with him all the time and give him treats. He doesnt seem to be stressed or lonley because he acts normal, eats his food and drinks his water, and always wants out to play. PLEASE HELP ME!! have no clue how to get him to stop or what to do.

Is he from a breeder or from a pet store. My guy randomly started chewing also, but it's not very bad and in just one spot. Some say it's genetic, and some it's just a habit they pick up randomly and can't stop (like smoking).

I agreewith Brittney, where did you get him from? How old is your chin? I've had two fur chewers and both didn't start 'chewing' until they were 1 1/2-2 years old. I don't know if that is normal for that problem or not. If he is acting normal and not hurting him self by fur chewing, I wouldn't worry about it.

What kind of food and treats are you feeding him? Where is his cage? Is it in a quiet spot, a high traffic area? What is the temperature he is kept at?

Fur chewing is considered genetic, but there are things that may trigger it in one chin that it wouldn't in another. For instance, a stressful situation, loud noises, etc. Once they start, then it becomes a habit that is almost impossible to break.

Aside from looking ugly, fur chewing won't hurt him long-term.

he came from a pet store and he is 15 months old and just started this habit right around 4th of july.

cecil is 15 months old and is from a pet store. i got him when he was about 5 months old. i am feeding him nutrafase. and he is kept in the living room at about 73 degrees.

My Rosey started fur-chewing when Poppy got sick. She obviously knew her friend was ill and she was worried!
Unfortunately that was over a year ago now and Rosey hasn't stopped the chewing, even though Poppy has fully recovered from her illness.
Some days she chews worse than on others.

It doesnt seem to harm her though, and she still looks just as beautiful to me!!
