In September, 2012, the fiancee and I will be moving to Washington state and we'll be driving up there. My question is how long can two chinchillas go without food and water? we'll be keeping the smaller cage with us in the trunk so that I can set it up at the hotel room at night, at which point I plan on giving them both food and water at this point. But I need to know on wither or not to try and give them food and water on the drive out there?

I've never traveled with my chin, so I'm sure more knowledgeable people will respond, but I would think you would want to have a water bottle available at all times? And maybe hay could be in the travel cage as well.

By the way, welcome to the state! What area of Washington are you moving to?

Thats what I was thinking, too, attaching the water bottle to the cage.

I'll be moving to Everett :D

Do not give water while driving, it will just leak everywhere. Give them water when you stop for the night, but they'll be fine without it while you're on the go. I've driven many hours to and from shows with chins without any water for over 16 hours and they've all made it there and back.

I do give them hay cubes in their carriers to munch on if they want to, but most of the time they just sleep the whole drive.

I just give my chins water at night when traveling, and just throw some wood sticks, and a hay cube, or hay in the carrier with them and they did just fine.

Thank you everyone for the help! I'm super excited about the move, 2012 can't come soon enough.

Awesome, my folks still live there. If you like to walk I recommend Forest Park - amazingly beautiful with lots of walking trials, petting zoo, park and swimming pool.

As far as the travel, there's good advice here. We've made that trip (WA/OR to CA for shows) many, many times. It's quite a long drive strait through, ours handled it fine. Often it would be over 24 hours from the time they were packed until we got them set up on the show table with waterers.

If you don't want to stop throw an ice cube in. They'll play with it and lick it if they are thirsty. :))

You will love Washington, I have never regretted moving here. We live down in Renton but hubbie works up in Everett as an engineer at the Boeing plant. It will be nice to have another chin lover here. There are several breeders in the area.

very cool! I'm excited because it's some where new, rains a lot, and I'll actually know someone! My fiencee and I are already longing for Washington, September cannot come soon enough!

congrats on the move. i have never been to washington but have heard from many that it is "clean living"!

when i have traveled with my chins, i would line the carriers with fleece, toss in a nice hay cube & big chunk of wood. i would also pack a snack bag of pellets/treats is travelling long term. and toss in a couple pellets. i usually would strap them in the back seat with the seat belt and never put them on the floor, it gets way too hot. good luck. they will be fine.

My sister has lived in Washington for about 4 years now, we used to live in Philadelphia. It is beautiful over there and I'm sure you'll love it! I've only ever taken my guy for a 2 hour drive on his way home, but all I did was put some shavings in the bottom along with a handful of hay and some apple wood. He demolished both of those but ultimately slept most of the time.
