I just got a FN 142 off of Craiglist for free today. I was the home for rats prior to me getting this for the 2 chins we will be getting. Took it to car wash and power washed and bleached and rinsed, rinsed, rinsed. It was pretty gross and smelly but the washing made it look like new. There is still a slight rat smell...do you think it is embedded in the plastic trays (I will be using fleece liners until I get replacement metal pans? Does anybody have suggestions for getting residual smell out? How do you fleece line the ledges...I may use these ledges for a while (I will be putting other ledges in as well)? Do you just lay a liner over it or wrap it around the plastic sheet and tuck ends underneath? How many of you use the existing ledges in the FN and cover with fleece? I will be using liners for the pans...what is the best way to tack these down so the Chins can not get to the plastic pans?

Thoroughly spray the trays down with white vinegar and let them sit for an hour or so and then rinse off. Do not dilute the vinegar with water when you spray. If that doesn't work, you can spray hydrogen peroxide and white vinegar (keep them in separate bottles) and let that sit together then rinse off.

I will try the vinegar trick. I had read about using it to clean but did not know how good it was at taking out smell...it is great for getting of urine grime. Thanks for the advise about not diluting...I would have. Hope that does the trick and don't have to go to hydrogen peroxide. I will let you know how it works.
