Be very careful not to strip the screws. If it has been together awhile, all the dust/chin fur/whatever will have gotten on the screws and may make some a pain in the butt to unscrew. When you strip them it's almost next to impossible to get them out.

I've found that instead of completely taking them apart, it's a lot easier just to separate the two sections- taking the top level off, basically. If it's an option and you can transport them that way, it'll save you a whole lot of headache.

I suggest if you plan to take the top level off the bottom you remove the second screw so that the top level has the black pins sticking down from underneath rather than the bottom level having the pins sticking up. I am not sure if that makes any sense at all. I recently separated the two levels so I could take the cage outside to bleach it and hose it down. If you take off the top screw it leaves the four parts of the top level able to wiggle back and forth. I pinched my fingers several times getting it in and out of the house. Once the two sections were apart it was relatively easy to transport. I would suggest you get another person to help though if possible. They aren't extremely heavy once separated but they are very bulky to move by yourself. I was able to do it with a friend and neither of us is exactly 'buff'. It was just two 5' something girls lifting it. Mine had been together for about 5 years and I was able to get it apart once I located the proper screwdriver. Getting my ChinSpin off of the inside of the cage was actually harder.
