Hi everyone! I'm a new chinchilla owner of about two months now. My chinchilla and his cage was a gift from my boyfriend, and not knowing any better he got a cage with plastic shelves in it. Up until a few days ago he did not chew on the plastic, but now he's starting to. So I'm planning on covering the shelves with fleece but I have a few questions. If there is anyone with fleece covered shelves, do your chins pee on them? Right now he only pees on the bedding at the bottom but I'm wondering if he will start peeing on the shelves once they are fleece covered?

It really just depends on your chin. I have one that pees all over everything (fleece included), and one that only pees in his litter box.

My chins pee on the fleece, yes, but I change my fleece liners every 3-4 days. They go in the wash just fine :) I have nice fleece liners that fit over the floors in my cage like pillow cases. If you're on facebook, look up Fleece for Furries - great fleece liners for cages, lots of people around here have them.

Thanks so much! I just looked up that facebook page, I will definitely be ordering from her 😄

I have fleece covers, our chin started peeing in the same corner in each level of the cage. I purchased an 8x8 casserole dish from a second-hand store for a couple of dollars. I put pine shavings in dish and put it on the bottom level of the cage in the corner she was peeing. She now only pees in the dish. I change fleece covers once a week (I have two sets) and that seems often enough with a potty-trained chin.

Fleece is great! Even if your chin does pee on it, they wash very well. Just have a second set to use while the other is in the wash. And the fabric doesn't fray, even if you have to cut it for sizing. :))

I have four fleece liners per cage for my boys. They wash really well, and my lads love to sleep on them. Three of my chins enjoy rolling on them also. Just make sure you use a pet safe detergent when washing soiled ones.

I have fleece shelves and a bottom because my chin was eatting her bedding. Also its easier to clean the poop. I clean her poop daily and clean her sheets weekly because she only pees in one corner of her cage.
