I did a mercy rescue about a month ago. I saw the ad on CL, and the horrible condition the chins were in, so we went to see what we could do... There were 4 chins total. She fed them veggies and seeds. She just wouldn't listen to me because she was a vet tech, and knew more about the chins than some "little kid." :/

Looking at the chins, I see this miserable looking brown velvet. She was caged with a beige. I asked, and they were brother and sister. Awesome. I held her, and could feel she was pregnant. Ray and I decide to save her and any babies she may have from any more danger than they've been in already... I figured her due date was April 3rd.

Tonight, I leave for a few hours. I come back to check on everyone, and Anabelle is covered in blood. I see a baby tail covered in shavings... Trying not to cry, I pull it out. Nothing. I was devastated. A big, beautiful, perfect standard baby boy. Missing a toe, and sporting bite marks. Annie is so little, I don't doubt she had issues delivering and he had either been dead for a couple days, (contractions started on friday?) or he suffocated during delivery.

I can feel a baby still in her. I don't know what to expect- alive or no?

Is there anything I can do to make her more comfortable, or to make it easier on her? I'm hoping that the other baby is alive, but I don't want to get myself worked up over it if it's already too late...

I know this is a part of breeding, and it really sucks. Developing a callus for this and not getting completely attached is going to be hard, but I really think I can do this...

So, it's not a good way at all to have this start out. He was going to be the first baby here.... We were so excited. :cry3:

i'd get her to a chin qualified/experienced vet asap. if contractions started yesterday, and she had one kit with possible difficulty and hasn't delivered the other one yet, she may need an emergency c-section.

I would recommend going to the vet now, she is most likely going to need an emergency c-section. I'm so sorry, so, so sorry. </3 But with you she's got a fighting chance. It's really hard, I know.

I wish you the best!

Any updates? I hope you took the GREAT advice of getting her to a vet as that IS what she needed...the kit inside would be dead already...the mother, if in labor that long is also suffering as they should NOT be in labor that long. Please update...

We did take her to the vet. It was a long night. I guess I was really freaked out last night, because that was the only kit inside her. He weighed 57 grams. Her tummy is normal again, and she is hopping around and munching on hay normally.

I feel like if I had stayed home, I could've saved the little guy... It was awful trying to sleep; Crazy nightmares. I'm just happy we still have her.

Don't beat yourself up. Your new chinchilla was small and it was a very terrible thing for the previous people to subject her to such living conditions.

Your a great person. Your new chinchilla knows it. And she trusts you. Thats something that your chin shows to you. She greets you, is happy with taking hay and is aware when you come into the room. That a great feeling.

And since she is with you now it will be a wonderful life for her and she won't be pregnant again.

:)) Thanks. I am very happy that we still have her with us. She is going to love her pet life, and isn't going to know what to do with all of the love she'll get.:heart3:

I'm am glad to see that momma made it through okay, and she is lucky to have been with you and not in her previous situation. :) She knows she has it good now.
