hello all! My family has had our new chin, Vader, since Christmas and he is healthy and doing well. We have all the bare bones basics for him but I wanted to build up a small first aid kit to keep on hand. I saw a list in a book that had tons and tons of items in it! Do I need so much really? What are a handful of things I should have on hand for first aid that I can administer myself?

Check the FAQ for a list that most people have in their first aid kit, and you can modify it to what you feel you need.

I keep Critical Care, feeding syringes, Lifeline, Acidophilus tablets/capsules, Blu-Kote, and Infant gas drops on hand. The only thing I have not used in 4 years is the Blu-Kote (actually had to get a new bottle since it had expired or leaked or something). No cuts or scratches, or fungus here yet :)) *knock on wood*!

It never hurts to be prepared :) As far as bare essentials for a first aid kit I would recommend at least the following:
1. Critical Care - if you go to Oxbows website you can find a vet near you that probably carries it. Just a 1lb package is good for emergencies. It will last a while too
2. Syringes for force feeding
3. Blue Kote to treat small injuries
4. Infant gas drops.

If I didn't have anything else, I would at least have those things on hand at all times.

I would also have some canned pumpkin on hand (not pumpkin pie mix; just planned canned pumpkin), for those times of constipation. I would also recommend some other basic first-aid care: sterile gauze, etc.
