I just bought a ferret tree from petsmart and, so far, Rocco (chinchilla) loves it. It's mostly carpeted and has no little toys or anything, it's just a tower. Anything I should be concerned about? I think he's already trying to chew the carpet parts up.

Thanks for telling me. Needless to say, the tree is never going in playtime again and I'll be watching out for signs of impaction.

I've used a cat tree before for my chins, there was no problems. I mean, my chins run around a carpeted room. However if your chin is actually trying to eat the carpet that's obviously a problem.

I agree. A whole bunch of chins have playtime in a carpeted room. I would just keep an eye on them to make sure they aren't chewing on the carpet. If they are, it's time to find a new play toy. I also always put out wood chews during playtime.

The problem with the trees is that they are usually made of low quality carpet and have lots of carpeted corners--this means more spots for the chins to want to chew than a flat carpet floor.

I dreamed of a room full of various cat condos and trees with chins all over the place, but the carpet just puts a damper on that. So I want to either make my own trees with no carpeting or buy some trees and take the carpet off them--but of course, they are probably made of plywood, so that wouldn't be safe either. So I guess I'm going for homemade :)

Well, like I said, I had no issues, and I don't see the problem with them provided your chin isn't trying to eat it. It's like fleece. It works for some chins but not for others. If your chin were eating fleece, it's considered unsafe for them then.

Rocco isn't showing any signs of impaction, so I don't think he ate any of the carpet. I still won't be using that tree anymore, though.
