So, my dad all of the sudden wants me to pay $600 a month to live in his house which I barely live in I just sleep there. I don't know why this is, but now I'm looking at apartments and I've found a nice one that's pet friendly so maybe me and the boys can just get our own place? Also, its cheaper than what my dad wants so that's a plus, and I wont have to be under his control. I figure I'd rather pay a little more and not deal with him, and have him start paying for my school that I've been paying for this last year.

So yeah, that's my day.

Be forewarned, there's always a bunch more expenses than expected. Not to be a downer (moving out is awesome!) but there's electric, internet, cable, phone, food, etc etc..... plus costs to rent the truck and do the move, deposits on electric and cable etc... it really does add up.

So make sure to look into these things. Possibly consider getting a roommate, as well. But on the other hand, I wouldn't pay $600/mo to stay at my parents' house, either. :D

Wow..$600 a month seem a bit much for living in your parents house. But I agree with EnslavedByNinjas there are other expenses to consider with moving out on your own.

I had a family member do that to me years and years ago and I moved out. They were only asking $200 a month, but it wasn't worth it to have to put up with them.

I hope it all works out... $600 a month! Man, you must eat a lot. :p (I'm just kidding, that seems really high for just renting a bedroom.)

Yeah, that is quite a bit for living at home, but I guess it's his house so he can do what he wants with it..

I hope you find a place. If it included utilities that'd be awesome, because in my experience utilities are always more than you think they'll be. And remember that you'll have to make a deposit which sometimes is the first month's rent, so upfront you'll need double what rent is.

And I really hope you don't have to rehome your chins, that would be horrible.

Well, luckily for me, all my boyfriends family friends own houses and rent them and they're all around here (and these are really nice homes) so I can prolly get a deal on a room and have the chinnies, I wouldn't give them up for the world. They'd move to Charlie's if need be. It comes out to $750 with my dad if you count that I already pay for my car insurance and phone. So, yeah. I think moving out is worth it and hopefully I can get a nice deal ^_^

Since you're only sleeping at your dad's it sounds like you're hardly ever there, so it would be a good idea to move out on your own so you can spend more time with you chinchillas as well.
Where are you spending your time? Perhaps you and a friend can get a place together and share expenses.
I agree with Andrew when you move out on your own there are a lot of expenses you take for granted at your folks such as groceries, cable, electric and gas and the like. Not to mention how much cleaning supplies such as lysol, windex, floor cleaner and such costs.
Still if you're really not ever at home you shouldn't spend that much to live somewhere you never are.

Yes moving out is expensive, but your dad charging 600$, wow, that's about my montly rent+grocery together. My best advice it make de budget to see what you can afford. I hope you get a good deal with your boyfriend's relatives.

I say go for it because $600 is a lot for just sleeping there. I am glad you can keep your chins if do decide to move out. Maybe your Dad just wants the house to himself and made the rent high? I know my parents are counting the days til my brother moves out! Ya never know!

okay, so being someone who moved out on their own before their 18th birthday, I am living proof it can be done.

I'm in socal too (Santa Barbara) so my rent might be a bit higher, but I'll give you my finacial breakdown to give you a better idea...

My apartment (which I split with my boyfriend) is $1250, so that mean $625 for me.

-$625= rent
-$625= my half of security deposit (one time expense)
-$45=electric per month (without a/c)
-$75=electric with a/c
-$300=groceries (I also cook dinner everynight)
-$60=internet/phone service
-$50-$70=misc. items (tissue paper, detergents, soaps, shampoos etc.)

My water and trash are included, but I think it'd be an extra 30-60 a month, but I could be wrong...

Now keep in mind, this is just my situation-but there are things you don't think about. If you like to go to movies or out to eat, that takes away from these funds. You really have to learn to keep track of your money. You're looking at spending over $1000 a month if prices by you are anywhere near SB.

The total may look scary, but you can find smaller, cheaper places and SB is veryyyy expensive. If you found something cheaper and smaller, your costs would go down.

Hope that helps!

Los Gatos is EXTREMELY expensive, but San Jose has some cheap places. I may be able to stay at one of Neil's houses for free and just pay utilities. We'll see, maybe I can give Charlie the final push out of the nest and get him to come with me.

Thanks guys for the advice and support :] its very useful

One word - ROOMATES! I loved living with a roomate and it's handy if you need to go out of town and need someone to watch the chins for a few days...

See, and I'm the opposite of that. I only had a roommate half of my freshman year of college and I hated it. Junior year I got an apartment, and had it all to myself. I just hate sharing a living space with someone. Obviously not my family or anything, but people that I don't know very well. I think if I had a good friend it would have worked, but I enjoyed my alone time. But a roommate would help with the costs, but thankfully where I lived it wasn't as expensive to live.
