:skeptical:

I took Pipsqueak back to the vet on Monday for a recheck. He is doing well with the Baytril (although he hates it), and is not drooling right now. He has not really gotten back to eating on his own, though, and has lost some weight. The vet recommended giving him Ensure in a feeding syringe. Is this a good idea? I would think that the milk or soy in it would be hard on a chin's system. Is there another weight-builder that would work? Like one that they give to horses (Fat Cat comes to mind)?

Thanks in advance!

No ensure or anything fatty to gain weight. Lifeline added to critical care can help. Tanya here also sells supplements that can help, you can PM her and ask for advice. Slow weight gain is best in chinchillas.

i put in your other thread about the lifeline. i use that ground down (it has bee pollen in it, so it clogs my small syringe) and i add water and put it all together in 1 syringe to help mask the nasty taste of baytrl.

my chins definitely like the taste of EFL better than critical care, but CC is good in emergency situations as you can get it right away. both are good to keep on hand, i keep them in the fridge or freezer to maintain freshness, as well as the lifeline.
i also feed my malo chin and a couple picky eaters the Beaphar plus for chins pellets.
one bag is extremely expensive so i am very stingy with it. my malo chin gets a nice bunch and my pita chins get 5 to 10 pellets mixed with their regular pellet.
I now purchase it exclusively thru

partnerspets.com

they are based overseas, so it takes a good 2 - 3 weeks to receive a bag and the cost for a small bag is about $50.00

but with 1 chin that would last several months. if i wasnt almost out, i would offer to send you a sample. when i get my new bag, i can send you a pinch to let your chin just try it.

yeah, i'd be hesitant to give anything meant for humans like Ensure to my chin. i would definitely go with EFL as the above poster recommended.
