My chin Rigsby will eat the entire Toilet paper tube in one day,I find none of it in the cage. Is this OK? How often can he have one? Maybe I should cut them in half?

I know it's safe for the to chew cardboard as long as there is no writing on it, but as for how much at once, sorry i can't answer that one.. I'm sure someone else will... hope it's not too much.

Cardboard pet products are considered safe for chins to chew on,but cardboard should not become part of chins diet( if they ingest really small amounts of paper, it usually does not cause problems). However if a chin ingests lots of paper( like 1 toilet tube a day) it can cause obstruction and may also reduce the amount of hay/pellets a chin eats. I would not put any cardboard items in my chins cages. I used to put some cardboard tunnels during playtime because chins are supervised.
Commercial cardboard (toilet paper rolls) may have wax or glues or chemical pre-treatment. I do not think they are safe to put in chins cage. And it does not wear down their teeth enough, it's better to offer safe wood chews, pumice stones, different types of hays. Just my opinion.

I put tp tubes in once in a while. I would not do it daily especially if he is eating it like that. But an ocasional toy should be fine

i give them occasionally but i also notice that with some brands (more often with the paper towels) there is a glue residue. those i throw out. the other ones i stuff with hay and mine will nibble but never really "eat" them.

I don't leave cardboard tubes in Idgie's cage b/c I fear that she might eat too much of it. I might give her one at playtime or for a limited period of time, but due to concerns about obstruction and glue, I don't find that it is worth it.

Thanks all, I think I will stop giving them to him. For the record though I was not giving him one TP tube a day! He has only ever had 2 tubes in the 6 months that I have had him, and they were given several weeks apart, The "in one day" was just the time frame that he ate them both in. I did not say "one A day" lol!

Does he really eat it or just sort of chew it up? Ours will chew on the TP tubes and you can see very fine little pieces of cardboard in the bottom bedding. Reminds me of what the gerbils do to the tubes they get.

Oh yeah, nothing left in the cage at all, lol!
