Can anyone enlighten me on ear tags? I understand that you must have them to show a chin but where do you get them? Do they hurt the chins? Can they get infected? Any info will be greatly appreciated!

ECBC sanctioned shows require eartags but if it is a non-sanctioned show (field day/claiming show, seminar, etc.), they are not required. I'm not sure about MCBA's requirements.

I purchased all my ear tags through National Band and Tag Co. online.

No, it does not seem to hurt the chins. It is like an ear piercing but I've tagged many chins and never have any even flinched - it's like they don't even feel it.

I suppose it is possible for it to get infection but there is little risk of infection in that location and I've never had any problems.

ETA: Here's the website for the chin tags from National Band and Tag: http://www.nationalband.com/1005b.htm. Your registered ranch brand goes on the back and the numbers on the front.

Yes they can get infected. Some people will wipe an alcohol swap on the ear before tagging but most don't. I have had chins complain but I think that's just because I'm holding them funny in order to tag them. There is blood upon occasion - especially if you hit the vein in the lower portion of the ear.

I found out almost immediately to tag whether it is a requirement or not. Stuff happens at shows and animals get lost and/or mixed up. I would much prefer to tag than to loose an animal.

Also, when purchasing large quantities of animals you need to take 'blank' tags and tag them or ask they be tagged for pickup. I purchased tags with numbers only on them and tag the new animals and put their ear tag # on their pedigree. Makes it so much easier to match the animal up especially when you have a lot of standards.

For pet owners planning to show (with only one or two chins), would you still recommend tagging? If so, how do you go about getting just a couple custom tags?

If you're showing in a MCBA show, it's not required (as Becky stated above). If you're wanting a custom tag, you're going to have to order the minimum order from the company whose link is listed in this thread, otherwise, you can get someone else to tag them. It's not totally unheard of to have someone else tag your chin with their tag.
