which dusts are best, the fine kind or the grittier kind, the kind i have now is very fine, and the kind that kishi originally had, and the kind i always had for silkie was alot grittier, more like sand
also is there a list of the best dusts? blue cloud i know, are there any other brands i should look for?

I realy like the blue cloud but you can use sparkle also. I find the stuff you can buy in the stores is not as fine and don't work as well as blue cloud. Do you know what brand you are currently using?

i'd have to look, at it,but i think it's superpet, it's fairly gritty, more like sand really, altho she does make a nice poof when she comes out of the bath,i want to get her some better kind
edited to add: also have some kaytee that i mix with it(almost forgot about that)

My chinchilla had eye problems with blue sparkle. Now I changed to Blue Cloud, and like it much more.

is that the brand? or is that made by a brand like oxbow or the like
Edited to add:the blue sparkle i mean

The Kaytee stuff doesn't work nearly as well. Blue Sparkle is kind of like Blue Cloud except it has a sparkle to it much like the Kaytee stuff does. It's a bit cheaper than Blue Cloud but is bought online like Blue Cloud.

thanks, they have blue cloud at chinworld fairly inexpensive, 4.40 for a 5lb bag,i'll look into that:)

I'm ordering through Ryersons too. I'm getting the 50 lbs of blue cloud.

I LOVE the blue cloud! My chins have beautiful coats since using it. Our 9 week old was so nasty when I got him and now after just one bath his coat is so soft and clean again that he looks like a completely different chinchilla.

I tried the stuff they sell at wal-mart once and threw it out because the chins didn't like it and their coats looked horrid. So we use blue cloud and won't ever use anything else.

I used the stuff they sell in Petsmart before I learned there were much better options. Now, I use Blue Cloud. There is such a big difference in their coats that I would never consider using the other stuff again.

All of our breeders, just weaned kits and growers are dusted with Blue Sparkle. When we decide they may be show material they go on Blue Cloud. Its just to expensive for us to use Blue Cloud on everything. Blue Cloud is definately better for the show animals we feel.

I recently met someone who has been keeping/breeding chins for about 20 years, that had been experimenting with ground oil dry, which is some kind of clay! Said he hadn't bathed them for about 3 weeks, and they looked it! I didn't question it and just let it go - changed the subject! Couldn't see it.
Now I know from experience, oil dry, when rubbed into cement with a housebrick, will make oil stains disappear, but can't see it helping a chin, in any way, shape, or form!

I use Blue Cloud. I've tried Blue Sparkle before, and I just didn't care for it. In my opinion Blue Cloud is the best.

Blue cloud here too. Where do they manufacture it anyhow? It is kind of expensive having it shipped. My sis bring me out like a 20 or 25 pd bag from ca when she comes out and it is only like 15 dollars. Still no matter what the price, i use it. I have tried many other brands over the years and never was satisfied with any of them.

Has anyone been buying Super Pet Chinchilla Sand? My chins love it, and yes it's the grittier sand-like substance. But the last 2 boxes I bought were more like dust or powder--very fine consistency. I noticed it made me cough horribly, and the chinnies don't like it.

Does anyone know if they changed their product, and if so, if there's another kind of sand out there to buy? I've used Blue Cloud and the same thing happened--caused me to cough and the chins don't like it.

Would love some help!!

There is also Blue Sparkle dust and some people use Fullers Earth dust, which you can find at Tractor Supply company. But what I would suggest you do, is wear a mask when dusting because the chinchilla sand is bad for their fur, as it is can break the fur down and make their skin really itchy. When you say that your chins do not like the Blue Cloud, what do you mean?

The finer stuff is actually better for the chins fur. It gets into their coat better and doesn't irritate their skin. If you buy a dust house or a big jar with a smaller opening, you can trap in a lot of the dust that the chins stir up when they bathe. Or if you even have an open box with one side and the top cut out you could probably set that on top of a big bowl and keep some dust in. Lots of people have problems with the dust, also. Some wear those masks over their nose and mouths.

I'm so amazed to hear how bad the gritty sand is compared to the finer dust! I've been using this for almost 7 years with my chins, and they've been fine. Priscilla's fur isn't as soft as Minnie's, so maybe that's the reason.

But when I tried using the powder this time around, Minnie seemed to have difficulty--she kept sneezing, couldn't open her eyes, etc. It's like she was immediately affected by it. Has anyone experienced that?

Thanks for your great suggestions!

Some of the chins will sneeze while dusting. It usually means they aren't used to it or they're overly excited to have real dust to roll in. Closing the eyes is usually associated with bliss during bathtime. I give my chins their baths and I leave the room. Even with a mask I end up coughing and sneezing all day so I just give them their dust, turn on the vent fan and leave the room.
